i think its popular for the same reason that people in the us bash it

the fact that there is not a lot of scoring

games are close, udrenaline rises and there is a lot of excitment, fans are anxious and worried for their team and the relief of scoring a goal or the angst of letting a goal in just creates a lot of powerful emotions

it takes a lot of skill to score a goal so goals, when they come are beautiful to watch and also create excitment to the crowd. and the fact that they only come by a so infrequently means that each goal is important

plus soccer is beautiful even when people arent scoring, amazing moves and combinations that lead to an incredible block, a near miss or hit the post. they dont go in but are still just as amazing when you watch them

the perfect opposit is basketball, where scoring is constant, if you score 200 times in a game, scoring is nothing special and not a reason for much celebration. you'll never hear the crowd gusp at a missed layup though

Because soccer is a shorter game with less COMMERCIALs. . You can tune in late in the NFL/NBA/other. knowing that most of the time the team that wins the second half almost always wins the game.

at international level like the ongoing euros, soccer is a popular spectator sport because the style of play of a team, is a reflection of the people of the nation in terms of mentality, good and bad traits etc.

for example germany is like a machine, leaves nothing to chance, plays the game with meticulous precision.

while a country like brazil plays the game like a dance....samba...they rely more on individual skill....often graceful style of play....highly technically skilled game.

the hugs masses take lots pride in how their country stack up vs other nations and they can identify themselves with how their team approach the game.

It's called the beautiful game. Just remember. Soccer players have played in the NBA and in the NFL. However, no NBA player or an NFL player played soccer.

it is true that soccer requires a lot more technical skill to succeed

lebron is very athletic but is not the most tecnical player, yet he is considered one of the best basketball players ever, if he played football he'd probably be considered one of the best in that sport too

you cannot be a champion in soccer just with athletic ability, you neeed to have technical skills, like messi or ronaldo
