I don't fill out brackets. I wager on the games so I take them in rotation order. My method of predicting games revolves around the markets. While I can produce the opening spreads and even sharper forecasts between potential teams in future rounds, it is difficult for me to determine the moneyline winner or spread winner until the game shows up on the rotation, with all the other games. There are a few exeptions.

I could run multiple scenarios but that is essentially a waste of time.

I haven't filled out a full bracket pre-tournament in a very long time, it's just not how I predict sports.

For the most part, I do mean when I see the lines. It’s hard to judge the spread winner if you don’t know the actual spread. No matter my forecast, these markets aren’t nearly as efficient as many believe and the oddsmakers can be off quite a bit. It doesn’t always open where I think it will and it doesn’t always move my way. In these instances I usually know why.

So yeah, I may think a team will beat another by X points, but without knowing the offered price or spread in the market, I can’t determine value.

As far as the actual rotation order is concerned there can be significance. I don’t want to go into all the details but know that the books take positions and allow a lot of give and take from different betting groups. Seeing where the books are lined in early games can help me determine their thinking and positions in later games.

This can be very difficult and is one of the reasons games change direction so often. We are likely to see upset “scares” with high ranked teams down double digits only to come back and win, maybe even covering the spread.

Eventually some of those high ranked teams lose. Some people “spot” bet and, often times, I think they are tapping into what is essentially the book rotating the bettors around based on methodology. Most “spot” bettors, however, tend to be too subjective, falling to the whims of the market, and don’t have the big picture in mind.
