    IRS and Horse Track Winnings
Say you cash a trifecta at your local track for $3,000
You do all the paper work at the window when you cash
your ticket. Now the IRS is going to receive info that you
won this sum of money. My question is when you do your
taxes and say you lost that much betting horses through
the year. What do you need as proof? Will a cigar box full
of losing tickets be enough or do you have to keep some
kind of log with the tickets.

You can use tickets or win/loss statements from casinos.
If you do not itemize, it will do you no good! You will have to pay, if you make little earned income, it wont hurt you that much!

I would assume losing tickets would be sufficent.
I know for state lottos you can use losing scratch offs, etc...

From what I understand, they do recommend and prefer that you keep logs... but losing tickets should be adequate.
