#72MLB Rulebook Rule 7.09(i) Comment: When a catcher and batter-runner going to first base have contact when the catcher is fielding the ball, there is generally no violation and nothing should be called. Obstruction by a fielder attempting to field a ball should be called only in very flagrant and violent cases because the rules give him the right of way, but of course such right of way is not a license to, for example, intentionally trip a runner even though fielding the ball.period

#73No. He has to go home to get home. If he would have been out by 50 feet, he would still be out. The intent of the rule is to compensate the runner as if he was not impeded.Comment -

#74No matter what, they screwed up. Under Type B obstruction, the play is supposed to proceed. But the umpires has clearly signaled already and home plate ump didn't even make a call. The discretion should be exercised after the play based on whether in the ump's discretion the player would have been safe. Clearly he had already decided though.Comment -

#75You could also easily argue he lifted his feet to get out of the baseline to let the runner through. The runner was not near the baseline and was not heading in the right direction. How can a guy on the ground predict that? Does the runner have no responsibility to avoid tripping over feet when he's not where he should be?Comment -

#78That's fine, at least you explain yourself. I'm not gonna lose sleep over it either way as I don't give a shit about either team but I don't see it as an absolute correct call like some people. If Craig slides and runs properly, he walks home anyway, just don't think Boston should be penalized because he ran the bases like it was little league.Comment -

#83For the total clueless who don't know what the base path is, it's 3 feet inside AND outside that little white foul line, for a total of 6 feet. Clearly Craig was never outside that path ever. If Middlebrook was trying to get up, his toes would have been in the dirt, not 3 feet in the air.Comment -

#85Your post doesn't even make sense. Learn the rules. I can't blame Middlebrook for trying to do something after he screwed up, just don't cry after you get caught. Toes in the dirt next time.Comment -

#88Easy call. He could not get to the baseline because he slid into third and tried to get up. 3rd baseman was laying there in the way and lifted his legs up. So obvious he was trying to impede him.Comment -

#93shouldn't of been obstruction because the 3rd baseman was between 2nd and 3rd, not 3rd and home
Stupid real either way. It needs to say intent in the rule. If he was on 2nd and then tripped because he could score, than that would be obstruction.
Base runner was on inside of 3rd and tripped over middlebrooks that wasn't obstructing anything between home and 3rdComment
