Why is it that the greatest soccer players look like skinny unathletic average guys?
I remember watching the world cup a few month ago and I remember ESPN trying to hype it up and the players as great athletes, yet they were all skinny white guys that you might see on a street. I remember some Spanish soccer player who was supposed to be the best athlete in that country apparently yet he was like 5'7 and 150 lbs and looked like this guy at my work.
What's up with soccer not having big strong fast athletes like all other sports?
They run like 8 miles per match.
I dont think being bulky or overly muscular is an advantage in soccer.
No such thing as a "big strong" soccer players....guys like Messi, Ronaldo, etc. are pretty lean. Ronaldo is 6 foot so he's not as short as Messi who's around 5'7". Didier Drogba is probably one of the biggest players around at 6'2", other than the human death stick Peter Crouch at 6'8". As much as soccer players run, if you find a fat one it's normally gonna be because he's got a problem pushing himself away from the table like the "real" Ronaldo who just retired.

A soccer player should run nearly 6-7 miles in a match. if he is a midfielder or forward who should accelerate and decelerate suddenly.also he should can turns suddenly. tall players don't have a good balance. Balance is so important factor for midfielders and forwards.

On the other hand there are some exception. Louis Saha, Bergkamp, Kenneth Andersson, Christian Vieri, Luca Toni, Patrick Viera...they were good athletic soccer players in last 10 years...

Are you denying the fact that soccer doesnt pay as well as the NFL and hence the best athletes go into NFL? The highest paied soccer player in the world is David Beckham who earns 6 million a year, yet Peyton Manning (a much bigger stronger guy) gets paid 30 million. Soccer gets the scrubs athletes of the world, the small guys who couldn't compete for football, basketball or baseball money, so they have to settle for a lesser money sport.
