Report: Brett Favre offered more money
MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings reportedly have made a new financial pitch to Brett Favre, hoping to keep the presumptive future Hall of Famer from announcing his retirement.
Favre has informed the Vikings he will not return to Minnesota for a second season, according to multiple reports. Favre sent text messages to teammates saying, "This is it," league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

    Favre Retiring Again?

If Brett Favre does retire, he will leave the NFL holding several passing records and three NFL MVP awards. The 11-time Pro Bowler also has 18 straight 3,000-yard seasons and 12 consecutive years of 20 or more TD passes.
Consecutive starts Favre 285 Peyton Manning 192 Pass yards Favre 69,329 Dan Marino 61,361 TD passes Favre 497 Marino 420 Completions Favre 6,083 Marino 4,967 Interceptions Favre 317 George Blanda 277

However, the Vikings reportedly are ready to increase Favre's salary for this season in order to get him to hold off on retirement for another year.
Sources told the Star Tribune that the Vikings have offered to increase Favre's salary to $16 million guaranteed -- $3 million more than he was scheduled to make this season, plus another $4 million in incentives that could potentially pay Favre $20 million total for the 2010 season.
There was a Favre sighting on Wednesday as he hit the practice field at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Favre did not appear to be working out Wednesday morning, but simply ran onto the field and began lightly tossing the ball with players in warmups. He then helped and assistant coach as the players went through drills.
The quarterback made no comments to reporters before taking the field.
Favre has made regular appearances at Oak Grove in the summer for several years, working out with players during informal summer drills as he prepared for the upcoming season.
NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci, who was Favre's quarterback coach with the Packers from 1992 to 1995 and is a close friend of Favre's, said Tuesday that the quarterback hasn't made up his mind on whether to retire.
"He hasn't told anybody officially, 'I'm done,' " Mariucci said on "NFL Total Access" on the NFL Network.
"Right now, he hasn't retired," Mariucci said. "He's still trying to get healthy. He doesn't know if he's going to be able to be healthy in time. That's the question mark right now."

He hurt his left ankle in the NFC Championship Game loss to the New Orleans Saints and had arthroscopic surgery in May.
Mariucci isn't the only person associated with Favre who has said the quarterback hasn't made a decision yet. A family source told the Biloxi Sun Herald on Tuesday that Favre "has not made a commitment to play or a decision to return at this point."
Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe said Favre texted his teammates and told them he plans to retire. Shiancoe added he did not receive any direct messages from Favre, but learned of the texts from several teammates.
"He told a couple guys on our team he's going to retire," Shiancoe said after practice on Tuesday. "He hasn't told me yet. I'm going to check my phone right now, but it hasn't been said publicly yet so I don't know what to believe."
Neither Favre nor the Vikings has confirmed the news.
After the Vikings completed a morning practice Tuesday, coach Brad Childress would not confirm Favre's status with the team and called it a "fluid situation." He told reporters that he had not heard from Favre directly about the decision, but said he could have a message waiting for him from the quarterback.
With Favre, of course, nothing is ever necessarily final after 19 NFL seasons. He told the Vikings last year he wouldn't play, but changed his mind and joined them immediately after they broke training camp, with Childress even driving to the airport to pick him up. Camp this year ends on Aug. 12.
Favre's agent, Bus Cook, did not return messages from The Associated Press.
Favre has waffled on retiring every summer since 2002. It led to an ugly parting with the Packers that got him traded from Green Bay to the Jets in 2008. After a so-so season in New York, he announced his retirement in early 2009 for the second time, then reconsidered and signed with the Vikings.
He had one of his best seasons last year, with career bests in completion percentage (68.4), quarterback rating (107.2) and fewest interceptions (7), while throwing for 33 TDs and 4,202 yards to lead the Vikings to an NFC North title.

Favre doesn't want Manning to break his iron man streak; he'll be starting somewhere.

I hope he just goes away. The problem with that is he might end up being a commentator and we'll have to listen to his mouth flappin' all the time anyway. I know he will do this because of his "attention seeking whoreness"!

I don't understand why an NFL team would keep bothering with an octogenarian instead of investing time and effort in a young QB who can help them build a future. Favre isn't going to help them build a future. Now, if Favre would accept the kind of role that Blanda had with the Raiders in the twilight of Blanda's career, then Favre might be worth keeping around. But, how does he help the Vikings when he isn't helping them groom a young QB and he announces his leaving the team every week?

Brett Favre told ESPN's Ed Werder that he has not made any decision about returning for the 2010 season and says he will play if healthy.

Favre denied that he has sent text messages to any Vikings personnel saying he is retiring.

Asked if money was a factor, Favre said this is not about money.

I think he has to come back and at least give it a GO.
If he does'nt I believe it will be a big let down for his taemmates and he owes them.
I've always been a big fan of his and will be greatly disappointed if he retires.

Vikings need Favre back for 2 reasons. #1 they realize that w/Favre this is a potential Super Bowl Champion team, and #2 having Favre helps a ton with tryin' to get the new stadium deal done. What don't people understand? With T jack or Sage this team isn't even in the mix and w/Favre the Vikes have a good shot at winning the Super Bowl..Favre is a special player and you make exceptions for special players. Week #1 at New Orleans Brett Favre will be the starting QB for the Minnesota Vikings. 2010 will not even be Favre's last year.

BTW, heard Jeff George on KFAN out of Minneapolis this morning and George is begging the Vikes to give him a tryout for the QB position. George is 1 year older than Favre, and insists that he will take the Vikings to the Super Bowl..

Anyone who hates Favre the past few years should be hating more on ESPN, they need these stories and have to make any info into a big story or make a story up. It's annoying to hear about it everyday but ESPN talks about it all day since it's slow this time of year. Kinda like the forum this time of year and jj is ESPN.

Same egotistical attitude.Favre is more useful at this point.I just see similarities. It pisses me off that people use to say that Kobe rode Shaq's coattails the championship.Shaq isn't half the player that Kobe is when it comes to skill.Favre is skilled but he's no Joe Montana

Farve is a "marketing genius" and WILL be back. Here is why:

His Goals: 1) He wants more money 2) doesn't want to hold out 3) he doesnt want to go to training camp
                                              so:

                                              1) He gets surgery to repair his ankle (showing he wants to come back)

                                              2) He then says "nothing" during the off season about his future.

                                              3) He then sends a text to only a few teammates eluding to his retirement (no true confession but is the same as holding out GOAL 2)

                                              4) The Vikings up their offer - (he gets more money without holding out GOAL 1)

                                              5) He says "I will come back if healthy" showing that he wants to come back but this allows him to not go to training camp (GOAL 3)

He gets all his goals with very little effort on his part...genius.

He will be back and the Vikings will win the conference, you heard it here first.

This is not a guy that has the buzz when he is a room like some other athletes, also does not have massive national appeal.

Rumor is he's back on the high school field practicing.

This is just a rumor though.

I do not understand the disliking of Brett Favre. Guy is a 41 year old kid and loves life. Gave us so many great memories in the NFL which we love. Hard not to like the good ol country boy, turned pro football legend. He can saddle a horse, hunt, live off the land and drive a tractor as well.
