The infractions are secondary, but nonetheless serious.

After firing coach Jimmy Tubbs in April for NCAA violations, SMU finds itself reporting another infraction on the watch of new coach Matt Doherty, The Dallas Morning News reports.

SMU reported a secondary violation, which concerns an SMU coach who watched several players work out in the offseason, to the NCAA and Conference USA on June 26, according to the paper.

Athletic director Steve Orsini said the NCAA contacted SMU last month for more information regarding the violations committed under Tubbs.

"These are secondary violations, there's a major difference," Orsini told The Morning News. "This won't be the first one we report or the last one we report."

With SMU's dubious past -- the school received the death penalty from the NCAA in 1987 for football infractions -- SMU president Gerald Turner has said the school needs to be diligent.

"Given our history, we have to take any allegations more serious than any other school in America. That's just the way things are," Turner said earlier this year. "We just have to do that."
