#10957Thanks STR! Steep ugly country ..right now it's a boat ride and a 2 hour hike to the bottom of the fire for the hotshot crews..... Boy I loved being on a" hotshot crew" couldn't wait for the adventure.... now I look at that and say " it's a young person's game" and do everything I can to watch out for their safety...... sounds off but.... I work at getting a dedicated "hoist helicopter" available for them. I order Paramedics to be inserted with the crews to provide "ALS" among other things... didn't mean to go "off topic".......Comment -

Probably the most difficult part of training is not dreaming. If you stay realistic and leave the dreams to the owners, you can do well.
Trainers are human, so easier said than done but let the owners dream and the trainers train and build towards bettering the horses.
That was my philosophy and you would be blown away by some of the names of people that said that too me when I first started training and never stopped picking the winning trainers brains .
So many of them would end up saying that to me individually. It was incredible.

yeah maybe they influenced the call ..nice n2x other than at del mar would seem to be a more logical spot with the added incentive it's nice to win there ..have to think they'd have at least one of those over the course of that meet

#10967I need to honor today , the greatest female racehorse I ever saw. Ruffian was the horse that gave me the drive to become a trainer when she ran past me as I watched from the stand, down the backstretch at the 5/8ths pole at Monmouth Park in the Sapling Stakes, a huge race for 2 yr. Old fillies back then.
Her eyes, when I saw her run by about 40 feet away from me, were like nothing I had ever seen or have seen since. When I saw her run by, I decided that moment that I would try and become a trainer and learn what it was all about.
I mention it today because it was 50 years ago this afternoon that she took that bad step and broke down at Belmont Park.
I remember refilling the water buckets around 6 pm after watching that race on a small tv in the tack room . It was after dinner at Bowie for all 48 horses. i was by then the asst. trainer for Dick Dutrow.
I cried like a baby the whole time.
A year later I had just started training horses. Gotta say I owe it all to her and the intensity of the effort she gave a year earlier when I saw her.
I’ve never seen anything like that since.
Thank you Ruffian. You were the catalyst to me becoming a trainer.Last edited by str; 07-06-25, 06:07 PM.Comment -

#10969Fascinated by the adventures of the Army Mule progeny. I had never heard of him and looked up his pedigree and racing record. Only 3 starts, but 3 wins and earnings of over $300,000, quite the accomplishment for about the 2016-17 era. Will continue to watch your contributions about this stallion. Thanks so much.Comment -

no problem dogkatcher .. str and I had followed him throughout his brief racing career and starting again with his first crop of 2yo's 3 years ago .. his wins were all brilliant including his finale in the carter at aqu .. he has turned out to be an excellent sire at his price point and it's been fun seeing his progeny do so well

know you have mentioned at least a few times that you saw her at monmouth and got a glimpse of the intensity in his eye .. fact it inspired you to become a trainer and her terrible fate can certainly understand you mentioning the dateComment -

#10980Wisconsin Gal. OMG. This clown show finally enters her in a race that makes sense. With her brains beaten in all the way down her form, she will only need her competitive heart to kick in even though it has been stepped on repeatedly by the jackass trainer/owner or whoever the inept handler is that calls the shots. If she can figure out down the backside that for once she is the superior horse, she will win in a gallop.
only way she loses is if the connections have crushed her confidence to zero.
Anyone that has read this thread over the years knows I’m not that “ can’t lose” knucklehead but unless her performance is severely affected by past experiences, she should win in a gallop.
lets hope her mind is not shot. Nobody in that race is in the same league as her IMO.
I’m kind of slow to respond as I have COVID. Hopefully it will be gone soon.

#10981hope you recover quickly from the covid str .. had it earlier this year and took me about 5-6 days to start feeling noticeably better .. not fun
last race a little concerning on WG but here I think she's ridden aggressively from the gate and without a lot of other speed will be very tough .. we both agree that all the races vs stakes company didn't make sense

But no sense in making her happy and thrive when they can scratch and find a spot where she is 38-1 a thousand miles away and van her there in July when the heat is horrible.
Sorry folks, I don’t mean to be sarcastic but with this clown show, actually I do.
The horse makes me smile. She is awesome. The connections make me sick. It’s pathetic.

I suppose the connections looked the race over and decided that winning would be detrimental to whatever it is they are trying to accomplish. She would have been darn near impossible to beat. She would have known after a 1/4 of a mile that she was dominant and would have likely won by 10 lengths eased up.

The state vet when they did want to run and the morning exam went badly, or, the connections decided to scratch and had their vet call in an excuse to the Stewards?
The first one , a state vet scratch, is not at all good although it could mean the horse was sore or simply running a fever. One is not a big deal while the other is a huge deal.
So much grey area there is no way to tell without more information.
That is one of those things that really leaves the fan without a clue as to what really happened.
The lack of transparency with “ vet” scratches has always been bad. Typically, if interested, like to claim the horse for instance, there are ways available that I used to have at my disposal to find out if I really cared to. But for the fan, it’s just not available. That’s unfair and always has been. I suppose it’s one of those things that most fans don’t really care about but when a fan does, and gets stymied along the way, it can be frustrating to say the least.
Racing could and should address that. It is certainly more important than how much the horse weighs when they provide that information.
This should be fixed. I mentioned it in an HBPA meeting about 48 years ago when I was elected to the board but got laughed at. I was so young compared to the other board members back then.
I served one term and quit. They were ridiculous. A complete waste of time for me.Last edited by str; 07-11-25, 03:34 PM.Comment -

That vet scratch means that the scratch was allowed to go through because in that short a field to begin with, no trainer can just decide to scratch. It has to be a clear reason. What is unclear is which vet and why.
