This matchup screams "Joe Silva knows something we don't." I'm guessing Shogun's recovery has not been that great. Otherwise why would they put their future cash cow in to get killed? Shogun is a bad, bad fight for Jones IMO. Not afraid to work off his back, otherworldly Muay Thai. How exactly does Jones win then? if he takes down Shogun, unless Jones' jits has gotten much better he either gets swept or subbed. Standing, I guarantee Jones is afraid to pull any flashy shit. One last thing that caught my attention - Greg Jackson is very concerned with how they can keep Jones at peak for another six weeks. Yeah he's young but in the Bader fight he looked slower every round. Dude cuts 20 pounds. Like I said, Jon Jones is the future of the UFC (from a marketing standpoint) and I don't believe Zuffa would give him this fight unless they were confident of the results.
And BTW Situation I must respectfully disagree about Machida. Yeah his aura of invicibility is gone, whatever that was worth, but I believe that Jones has not fought a legit BJJ black belt for a reason. People forget Matyushenko was close to getting a straight armbar on Jones.
Last thought I kinda agree about Phil Davis. More traditional mma body and much better subs, I think it would come down to conditioningComment -

I think Shogun's knees will be shitty for the fight, and I think they were probably shitty for the 2nd machida fight. I'm keeping my expectations low there and hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Even with some shitty knees I still don't expect Jones to have a great chance of holding him on the ground, nevermind connecting on the feet.

Good point about the default thing. I agree if Shogun was washed up Jones would have been first choice. This is a big, big risk for Zuffa. Should Shogun win, he gets even more popular, but you still have a champ that can't fight more than twice a year.
Okay another thought about this matchup concerning conditioning. Shogun had good cardio in the first machida fight, didn't have a chance to show it in the second. He was sloppy coming off surgery against Forrest so thats a concern. Then you look at Jones. He complains about his weight cut most fights, and against Bader he definitely slowed down. This will be Jones first five rounder, and he has to peak an extra six weeks. Assuming Shoguns in good shape the championship rounds definitely help him.
Jones has the advantage that his camp was already working on a Shogun gameplan, but Greg Jackson's gameplans usually center on breaking the opponents will early. I don't feel thats something you can do to Mauricio Rua. Maybe if Jones got that crucifix...Comment -

I've never heard the argument that having better subs (I assume more impressive) means that you will most likely win the fight. And being more conventional as well? Not sure how that factors in. BJ, Big Nog, Mir, etc. all have some hella-impressive subs on their record. But they've also been beaten up by guys that aren't JJ phenoms. Jones has fought the better opponents and has manhandled them. I think his MMA wrestling would negate most anything that Davis has to offer and his reach would give him fits in the standup. Not saying that Davis couldn't possibly beat Jones... but I could see Shogun or Machida's style taking out Bones before Davis'. I'm curious to hear Squareguys opinion on why Phil would get the W over Bones.Comment -

Jones has been able to use this with incredible success so far because fighters are not able to prepare for his unique style, and again, his length and athleticism. The number of fighters who aren't proficient in the clinch are staggering, and if they want to take him down, they better shoot in like a bantam weight or he's going to stuff it with ease. They simply do not have the raw athletic ability to compete.
(I'm not saying that most fighters aren't great athletes, but there is a HUGE difference between working for athleticism, and winning the genetic lottery.)

If Jon Jones won the genetic lottery, then Phil Davis at least took the SBR Casino for a ride (which is of course much harder).
I will argue that Davis is the man who is lengthy enough to deal with Jones' broad body in the clinch, and actually use his 84.5" reach against him.
Davis is 2 1/2" shorter, but still holds 79" of reach. He's going to be able to counter Jones' length, and have a better base of balance in the clinch. Mix this with his explosiveness and strength, and he's going to be able to easily pummel for underhooks where biomechanics will take care of the rest.
Once Davis gets the takedown that other fighters are unable to get, he is going to stay very tight and fight to stay close to Jone's center of balance on the ground.
Because Davis has extremely powerful legs, and a huge broad upper body, his weight will be evenly distributed in a dense area around Jone's center of gravity. Jones will become frustrated and because of his immaturity he will become emotional and make mistakes. Davis may not be able to submit him, but he will advance his positioning and take a healthy dump in Jones' recipe on his way to a UD 49-46.....Yup, that's exactly what will happen.Comment -
