#42trying to find an edge based on umpires is bs IMO. no disrespect to your capping, but first, an umpire shouldn't have an effect on an outcome of a game (unfortunately, with bad calls, in reality this isn't true), and secondly, a pitcher's performance shouldn't be blamed on the umpire. If a pitcher has control problems (high BB/9), then maybe I'd try to find the edge in umpires, but in reality shouldn't be a factor.
If an umpire shows a bias in favor of a certain situation, this yields a more generous strike zone, which leads to batters taking more risky swings. This is just one example. Another example is the game before the All-Star break between Twins and Reds in which a broken bat hit the home ump and he had to leave the game. His replacement proceeded to give a very generous strike zone - especially to the Twins. This, I believe, stemmed from an irrational fear of similar thing happening to him. And look at some of these idiot umps that think the crowd is at the park to see them (the Greinke ejection in the Brewers/Houston game is a perfect example). There are many other examples but, frankly, I don't care what your capping methods are for the simple reason that you are not on my 'A' list of forum contributors. I visit this forum to discuss the science and art of handicapping with like-minded folks. It's unfortunate that dealing with children, trolls, and habitual losers is the price of admission.
I'm giving you the benefit of doubt in that your statements are a genuine opinion you hold to be true and you don't belong to one of the aforementioned categories.
I'm studying today's Cards/Reds game with no bets in order to lay the foundation for tomorrow's game. I will give you a bit of advice. Sporting events are played, officiated, cheered, and booed by humans. Therefore, how an ump trends is an important part of my decision making to play or pass.Comment -

#46^^^I just noticed that you're chasing the Cards. Hope they take this today for your sake because Cueto is on the mound and Chapman (if doesn't close today), will have a fresh arm. Also, I suspect the big bats of Cinci will wake up tomorrow.

#48trying to find an edge based on umpires is bs IMO. no disrespect to your capping, but first, an umpire shouldn't have an effect on an outcome of a game (unfortunately, with bad calls, in reality this isn't true), and secondly, a pitcher's performance shouldn't be blamed on the umpire. If a pitcher has control problems (high BB/9), then maybe I'd try to find the edge in umpires, but in reality shouldn't be a factor.
lets say for example you have a control pitcher that needs the corners or a sinkerballer that needs the low strike to force guys to hit it into the ground to be successful and he facing a power guy that has way better swing and miss stuff, you put a ump behind plate that notorious for squeezing guys and you don think that has a possible effect on outcome?
or you have a kid you know can pitch but has some control issues at times, a ump with a generous k-zone isnt gonna effect him, just as a ump w small k-zone could really cause him problems, i fade Big Z quite often if i know i got a ump that has a small k-zone as not only can he struggle with control but has a temper that tends to implode when he isnt getting calls on borderline pitches...
bottom line is like anything else it is a tool, a somewhat valuable one if you have a ump with a distinct k-zone one way or the other and know the starting pitchers enough to know how it effects them... but again it just yet another tool to be used, more tools you have the easier it should be to get the job done..far as a pitchers history with a certain ump normally there not enough sample to really go off that imo but can give you a idea of what to expect in a way (as i said i felt all those poor starts by loshe w this ump were to early in his career to think it should be considered)...
certainly would agree you cant simply blame a pitchers performance on a ump (most the time) but again knowing a umps k-zone and knowing how this could benefit or hurt the pitcher can not be a bad thing..Comment -

#54I think in all sports, coaches should be able to do that. The NFL is the closest we got here in the US but in Europe managers are respected and top-tier players benched and fined when they play like shit.Comment -

#63Thanks for the heads up. Confirmed. Little Johnny got a blister and won't start. I spent all morning capping that match up and today's game was going to be final piece in the puzzle. With Homer in two days sooner than scheduled, the variables have certainly changed.Comment
