The most brilliant distraction of a generation is behind the Caps, as Alex Ovechkin surpassed the Great One to become the Greatest One. They should now be able to concentrate on playing hockey, something they haven't done very well in the last couple of weeks.

While I have no doubt Spencer Carbery has eyes on resting some of his top dogs in the last couple of games, he should go with his full lineup until the Caps start playing the type of hockey that made them a Stanley Cup odds contender.

I expect that road to recovery to start tonight against the Hurricanes, who have lost three in a row to non-playoff teams after going on a 12-2-0 run.

In the current three-game losing skid, Rod Brind'Amour's squad conceded five goals in successive contests for the first time since the end of November.

The fact that the Hurricanes and Capitals are locked into position for the postseason shouldn't negatively impact the game, with both teams using it as a dress rehearsal for when it counts for real. I expect a much closer clash than the last time they met in Carolina just over a week ago, with the Capitals prevailing.
