Few would have thought that a Week 8 Sunday Night Football matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders would be between two teams that occupy the bottom two spots in the NFC East, but each is looking for a big win to get them back in the NFC East race. My Eagles vs. Commanders prediction sides with the home favorites off extended rest, while Philadelphia’s injury concerns continue to rise.
Kickoff from Northwest Stadium in Landover. Md. is set for 8:20 p.m. ET (NBC), and Washington is a 5.5-point betting favorite.

Eagles vs. Commanders prediction & best bet
Commanders -5.5 (-110 via FanDuel)
Something has to give in this matchup, as Philadelphia hasn’t started 2-6 since 1999, while Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is amid an eight-game winless streak, which is tied for the third-longest by any quarterback in Commanders history.
A lot has changed since Philadelphia’s narrow 24-22 victory over Washington in Week 1. Jalen Hurts turned in his 13th career game with 3+ passing touchdowns, and the Eagles offensive line ranked in the top 10 for the week in both Pass Block and Run Block Win Rate.
Hurts is now out for the year, offensive tackle Lane Johnson has retired, and the Eagles could again be without their top receiving option, DeVonta Smith. But the Eagles defense of late is the bigger growing concern. They’re coming off a game against Dallas where they allowed a season-high 416 yards, generated zero sacks, quarterback hits, or tackles for loss, and totaled just seven quarterback pressures.
📡 SBR Edge: Rested off a bye
Washington has a big advantage coming off a bye week. Teams with a rest advantage are 22-8-1 ATS this season, and home teams in that split have covered 12 of 15 games (80%).
Philadelphia's lack of explosive plays should feed into Washington's blitz
The Eagles offense hasn’t scared anyone from an explosive-play perspective, as they rank dead last in the league with an average of 2.0 plays of 20+ yards. And without a consistent running game that Washington needs to honor (running backs Saquon Barkley and Dameon Pierce left last week’s game with injuries while Elijah Mitchell totaled just 11 rushing yards), that should have the Commanders dialing up blitzes early and often.
Washington already blitzes at the second highest rate in the league. It should utilize it more while testing Tanner McKee’s ability under pressure. The backup quarterback has completed 47.6% of his passes for 4.8 yards per attempt over the last two weeks.
