Memphis vs. Iowa State best bet

Iowa State returns three starters (Tamin Lipsey, Killyan Toure (out with injury), and Blake Buchanan) from a team that won 25 games in the regular season for the third time in program history. The Cyclones’ 29 wins overall were also tied for the second most in school history.
Despite losing sharpshooter Milan Momcilovic (transferred to Kentucky), the Cyclones still project to rank 24th in adjusted offensive efficiency (per KenPom). Memphis’ fast-paced attack that has ranked in the top 37 nationally in tempo should play right into Iowa State’s hands, as the Cyclones will look to space the floor in transition and knock down tons of 3-pointers.
Iowa State’s biggest advantage is a defense that projects to be second-best nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency. The unit is led by Lipsey, who is third in the history of the Big 12 in steals. It’s also a big reason the Cyclones have ranked in the top five in “Kill Shots” in each of the last three seasons, which is a measure of double-digit scoring runs.

Iowa State finished last season 21st in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency, its highest ever ranking under head coach T.J. Otzelberger. But even with that dramatic offensive improvement, the Cyclones defense was still light years ahead, finishing in the top five and allowing just 65 points per game through six conference tournaments and NCAA Tournament games when the competition and stakes were the highest.
While this game is played at a neutral site and not Hilton Coliseum, it's worth noting that the Cyclones force more than 17 turnovers per game in home games over the last three seasons. That is the seventh-most in the country and leads Power Conference teams in that span.
Since Otzelberger took over as head coach, Iowa State has held 151 of 177 opponents below their season scoring average entering the game. And with this being the first game action from a Memphis team that is constructed differently from last year, there should be a lot of growing pains when facing the Cyclones right out the gate.
