Win or go home. That's what's at stake for the 10th-seeded Miami Heat and 9th-seeded Charlotte Hornets when the two teams meet tonight in the NBA Play-In Tournament. Charlotte enters as a 5.5-point betting favorite ahead of a 7:30 p.m. ET (streaming on Prime Video) tipoff at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.
My Heat vs. Hornets prediction tonight includes an ATS pick and a top player prop as both franchises fight to extend their seasons - with the winner set to face the loser of the 7-8 matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic. The Hornets are young and streaky, while the Heat bring a seasoned, veteran core but a lower overall ceiling. Keep reading to find out why those factors should add up to a comfortable win for Charlotte.

π Who will win Heat vs. Hornets?
I like the Hornets to win by nine points tonight.
The Hornets ranked first in net rating in the NBA between Jan. 1 and April 3 and have a much higher ceiling than the Heat. Charlotte has better offensive stats, similar defensive stats, and is playing a postseason game at home for the first time since 2016.
Score prediction: Hornets 120, Heat 111
π° Heat vs. Hornets prediction & best bet
Our NBA playoff series odds break down all confirmed first-round matchups.
Hornets -5.5 (-110)
I'm banking on the Hornets' offense being too much for the Heat to handle tonight. Charlotte ranks first in offensive team estimated plus-minus (+6.3), per Dunks & Threes, while the Heat sit sixth in the same stat (+2).
Since the teams have similar defensive team EPM numbers - Charlotte is +1.5 and Miami is +1.4 - I think the Hornets' offense will be the key difference-maker in tonight's matchup. Hornets -5.5 is -110 at FanDuel, but I would be comfortable playing this up to -6.5 on the best sports betting sites.
π₯ Best Heat vs. Hornets player prop bet
The Hornets have the 11th-shortest odds to win the NBA Finals.
LaMelo Ball Over 4.5 3-pointers made (+135)
While there's no guarantee that the ball will go in the net for LaMelo tonight, it's practically guaranteed that he will attempt enough 3-pointers to reasonably make five or more.
Ball ranks first in the NBA in 3-point attempts per game (12.71) over the last two weeks and is shooting 39.2% from beyond the arc in April. He has gone over this line in five straight games. His Over 4.5 is +135 at FanDuel, but I would play this up to +110 on the best sports betting apps.
ποΈ Most-bet NBA player props tonight
Here's my analysis of the most-bet NBA player props tonight (h/t BetMGM):
| Player | Team | Bet | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dillon Brooks | Suns | Under 17.5 points | -105 |
| LaMelo Ball | Hornets | Over 7.5 assists | -155 |
| Kel'el Ware | Heat | Under 14.5 points + rebounds + assists | -150 |
| Devin Booker | Suns | Over 26.5 points | -115 |
| Andrew Wiggins | Heat | Under 14.5 points | -110 |
Dillon Brooks Under 17.5 points (-105) is a solid bet, as he has scored 15 or fewer points in six of his last seven games. Even though that bet is now -115 at BetMGM, itβs still the best widely available number, so Iβm not against playing it with the extra juice.
My favorite bet on this list is Devin Booker Over 26.5 points (-115), and I also back Booker to score 27+ in my NBA player props tonight.
π Heat vs. Hornets same-game parlay
If the Hornets can build a big lead, there's a strong chance that they will slow the game down in the fourth quarter and need less offensive production from Kon Knueppel.
The Hornets' star rookie has scored 14 or fewer points in four straight games, and Charlotte has won two of them by 14 points. This parlay is +330 at bet365 and +274 at FanDuel, and it is also featured in my Heat vs. Hornets player props.
💵 Heat vs. Hornets SGP picks
- Hornets -5.5
- Kon Knueppel Under 17.5 points
Best odds: +330 via bet365 (0.3u -> 1u)

π‘ How I'm betting Heat vs. Hornets: NBA Play-In Tournament strategy
Follow all of our NBA analysis and expert predictions this season.
I'm allocating 1.1 units for my spread pick, which is what I would usually bet on a spread with a small edge.
I bet slightly less than a unit on the Ball prop because, while I like the bet to hit, FanDuel usually does a good job of pricing player props, so I don't want to pretend I'm way smarter than the market despite it being early in the betting cycle.
Finally, I risked 0.3 units on my SGP, mainly because there is a lot of variance when combining bets.
π Live Heat vs. Hornets odds: NBA Play-In Tournament
This line is painted Hornets -5.5 across the board.
It opened at Hornets -5 at an offshore sportsbook on Sunday night and was bet up to -5.5 in about 15 minutes.
I expect the spread to stay put until tipoff, but I could see the Hornets going up to -6 at most.
