My Mariners vs. Rangers prediction backs Seattle to trim Texas’ lead to just a half game, even if Wyatt Langford continues to torment them. But Dominic Canzone may have had the biggest hit of the Mariners season to date, and he is a great bet to go yard with the last of my MLB picks.

Seattle was staring at a 3.5-game deficit in the division before yesterday’s comeback win, and I expect it to build off that momentum and earn a split of the four-game set.

George Kirby has arguably been Seattle’s most consistent starting pitcher. The team is 3-1 in his last four outings, with the only loss coming in a game it was shut out. 

Kirby has made six consecutive quality starts, and logged six-plus strikeouts in four of those outings. He has been a workhorse in two starts against the Rangers this season, throwing 13.2 innings while allowing four runs with a 9:2 K:BB ratio.

Kumar Rocker has made a team-high five scoreless starts, but the team is just 3-3 with a minus-7 run differential in his last six.

Wyatt Langford Over 1.5 total bases (+130)

Wyatt Langford is slashing .389/.405/.583 in 36 at-bats against the Mariners. Five of his hits against them have gone for extra bases, and he has exceeded this projected total on hits alone in four of his last eight games, with that many multi-hit performances in that span.

Langford is just 4-for-17 in his career against George Kirby, but the righty is susceptible to hits with seven or more allowed in six of seven starts since the calendar turned to June. Kirby has done well to pitch to a respectable 3.14 road ERA, but that may not keep up for long because of his .306 OBA in road starts. 

Langford leads the team with 25 total bases post-All-Star Break. His .979 OPS over the last 30 days suggests this is a great value play for him to end the afternoon with at least two total bases.

Dominic Canzone to hit a home run (+400)

The optimistic view on Kumar Rocker is that he has been tough of left-handed batters of late. Entering his last start, he paired a 31.8% strikeout rate with a 33% whiff in his previous 44 plate appearances to lefties. More specifically, his slider and cutter in that split produced a 38.1% and 18% whiff rate, respectively.

I am not tempering my expectations for Dominic Canzone, or any of Seattle’s left-handed hitters, given this extremely small sample size. Canzone has a home run in four at-bats against Rocker, and his 87th percentile barrel rate and average exit velocity suggest he is due for positive regression from his OPS that dipped from 1.027 in June to .676 this month.

Normally when any legs of my same-game parlay contradict each other, I swap them out for wagers that support each other. However, I am keeping the Langford total bases play given how hot he is against Seattle, as he could easily hit a double or log a multi-hit game in a Seattle victory. I am however, swapping my Canzone home run play for a more conservative wager on him to record an RBI, which he has done in two of three games this series.

I was hoping Seattle would have lost yesterday to enter on a five-game losing streak, as its moneyline odds would have been much less steep in that scenario. Either way, I was going to back the Mariners behind Kirby, especially since I have little confidence in any Rangers starting pitcher outside of Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi. With regards to Langford's player props, I settled on his total bases instead of anything having to do with RBI or runs scored, given Kirby's respectable road ERA.

There's a significant 15-cent gap at the best MLB betting sites between Seattle's shortest moneyline odds at -134 through FanDuel and the team's -149 odds at the other end of the market at bet365, which carry a 59.84% implied probability. There are plenty of believers in Seattle earning a series split, as 63% of the early wagers have backed the Mariners' moneyline.

Currently, bet365 is the only one of the best sports betting sites with an O/U of 7.5, as the rest of the market is at 8. bet365 did move its total back to 8 briefly after its first dip to 7.5, but that number didn't last long, and a second return to 7.5 took place overnight.
