Best NRFI Bets Today: MLB No Run First Inning Picks for Wednesday, Sept. 9
Last Updated: September 9, 2026 5:35 AM EDT β’ 4 minute read X Social Google News Link
My best NRFI bets today focus on the Washington Nationals vs. San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Angels vs. Boston Red Sox games. The Padres are one of the least likely teams to score or allow a run in the first inning, and I don't expect their offense to take advantage of a good matchup against Jackson Kent. Meanwhile, the Red Sox will put one of their best first-inning pitchers on the mound against the Angels.
Below, I dive into my best NRFI picks for the 15-game MLB slate.

π° Best NRFI bet today
Nationals vs. Padres (4:10 p.m. ET)
- Jackson Kent (5.55 ERA) vs. Walker Buehler (4.56 ERA)
- NRFI records: Nationals (70.1%) vs. Padres (75.9%)
The Padres rank second in most likely not to score in the first inning and most likely not to allow a run. They haven't allowed a first-inning run in five consecutive games, and tonight, Buehler, who has allowed a first-inning run in just 21.4% of his starts, takes the mound.
The only real concern with this play is that Kent has allowed a first-inning run in two of his five starts. But with the Padres going scoreless in 110 of their first innings, I'll take a chance here for the price of -108.
📡 SBR Edge: Kent has found an early rhythm
Kent has only started five games this season, and while he's allowed at least three earned runs in four of those games, he's held back-to-back opponents scoreless in the first inning. His most recent performance was against the Dodgers.

Angels vs. Red Sox (6:45 ET)
- Ryan Johnson (5.17 ERA) vs. Jake Bennett (3.34 ERA)
- NRFI records: Angels (66.9%) vs. Red Sox (74.7%)
The Angels may be one of the four most likely teams in the league to score in the first inning, but Bennett has allowed a first-inning run in just 11.8% of his starts. That means that of his 17 starts this season, he's allowed a first-inning run just twice.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox offense has scored in just 25.3% of its first innings, tied for the third-fewest in the league. Johnson has allowed a first-inning run in 26.7% of his starts, but he's held four consecutive opponents scoreless in the first frame.
π Best NRFI parlay today
First of all, I love that I'm getting a price of +104 for the Angels vs. Red Sox NRFI. The Angels have one of the best first-inning offenses, but Bennett has been incredible all season. If he shuts down the Angels, it's very unlikely that the Red Sox score. I'll pair this parlay with the Nationals vs. Padres NRFI, as I think the Padres' offense is being slightly overvalued against Kent.

π‘ How I'm betting NRFI picks today (Sept. 9)
Follow all of our MLB analysis and expert predictions for baseball season.
Betting against the Padres to score in the first inning has been a great way to make money all season, which is why I'm wagering two units on them and the Nationals to finish without a run in the first inning. I don't love Kent starting, but the top of the Padres' lineup hasn't even been able to do much against far worse pitchers than him. For the second day in a row, I'm also backing the Angels vs. Red Sox NRFI. The Angels' offense is good in the first inning, but Bennet is better.
β NRFI betting FAQ
What does NRFI mean in baseball betting?
NRFI stands for "No Run First Inning." It's a popular MLB bet that neither team will score in the first inning of a game, and the bet settles after just six outs (three per half-inning).
What does YRFI mean?
YRFI stands for "Yes Run First Inning" - the opposite of an NRFI. This MLB prop bet cashes if there's at least one run by either team in the first inning.
What should I look for when betting NRFIs?
Each team's starting pitcher is the biggest factor in cashing a NRFI bet, but you should also focus on each team's NRFI records (home vs. away) and each lineup's first-inning tendencies. Recent form can also play a bigger role than full-season numbers.
