Garcia looked like a more complete welterweight against Mario Barrios, landing 185 of 539 punches and a career-high 82 jabs in a lopsided decision. The jabs are the key to this next bout. In Benn’s first loss to Chris Eubank Jr., Eubank landed 150 jabs to Benn’s 35 as Benn struggled to get inside without taking clean shots.
Benn will pressure Garcia and work the body, giving him a clear path if Garcia becomes passive. The problem is that Benn’s forward style also gives Garcia chances to counter with his faster hands and dangerous left hook.
The weight cut adds another concern. Benn has not officially made 147 pounds since April 2022 and recently admitted to struggling with the process.
I expect Benn to have moments, but Garcia should control enough exchanges from range to build a lead and defend his title on the cards.
