My best Penn State vs. Washington prediction highlights how the weather could negatively impact two offenses that have struggled often this season. Additionally, I explain why Penn State's pass defense creates a matchup nightmare for a one-dimensional Washington offense.

Washington is favored by 2.5 points ahead of today's 3:30 p.m. ET game at Husky Stadium in Seattle. The game will air on FS1 and stream on FOX One.

Under 44.5 (-115 via FanDuel)

With rain in the forecast, I'm giving the edge to the defenses. Penn State ranks 24th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 18.6 points per game. Washington isn't much worse, allowing just 21.1 points per game, which ranks 42nd in the nation.

Penn State has scored 20 or fewer points in three of its five Big Ten games, topping 23 just once. That performance came against Purdue's 17th-ranked Big Ten scoring defense, so there's not much of a reason to celebrate the result.

Washington ranks 135th in rushing yards per game, managing just 95 per contest. This means Washington won't be able to take advantage of Penn State's main defensive weakness and will instead try to throw against the country's third-ranked pass defense.

📡 SBR Edge: Penn State will put pressure on the QB

Penn State has just 10 sacks this season. That average of 1.25 sacks per game ranks 115th nationally. However, I expect Penn State to have a lot more success on Saturday and get Washington behind the sticks often, as the Huskies have been sacked 26 times this year. That's tied for the seventh-most in the country.

Penn State's secondary is great at stopping big plays

Washington has 90 10-yard completions, the third-most in the Big Ten this season. The Huskies also have the fourth-most 20-yard passes (33), but they're not overly explosive beyond that. Washington ranks 11th in the Big Ten in 30-yard passes (9) and second-to-last in 50-yard passes (1).

Washington's problem is that Penn State is the best team in the Big Ten at avoiding passes of 10 or more yards. Teams have just 48 against the Nittany Lions this season. Penn State also leads the Big Ten in 20-yard passes allowed (14) and is second in 30-yard passes allowed (6). Without medium completions between 10 and 30 yards, Washington will have a very hard time reaching its season average of 26.5 points per game.

Play to: Under 38.5 at -110 if rain remains in the forecast.

Score prediction: Penn State 17, Washington 14
