My BYU vs. Utah prediction highlights how No. 3 Utah will dominate time of possession, limit the offensive opportunities for No. 9 BYU, and ultimately leave Saturday's matchup with a relatively easy win.

BYU running back LJ Martin returned to practice this week, but he is listed as questionable and is expected to see limited reps if he plays. Utah is a 4.5-point betting favorite, with kickoff from Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City set for noon ET (ABC).

Utah -4.5 (-106 via FanDuel)

Utah is allowing the 22nd-fewest rushing yards in the nation (101.38) and just held Cincinnati's seventh-ranked rushing attack 36 yards below its season average. This is bad news for a run-first BYU offense that is averaging 175.38 rushing yards per game and has struggled without Martin.

Though Martin returned to practice, Pete Thamel of ESPN reports that if he plays, he isn't completely healthy and could see limited reps. So where will BYU's offense, which managed just 47 yards on 30 carries against an Arizona State defense allowing 4.16 yards per carry, turn this week? I don't know.

Utah ranks 96th in passing yards allowed per game (229.0), but the Utes rank 34th in yards allowed per attempt and second in opponent completion percentage. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier is going to be called upon by BYU to shoulder the offensive load, but it's going to be a long day for him, as he's only completing 63.1% of his passes this season.

📡 SBR Edge

Though both teams rank top 14 nationally in third-down conversion percentage, Utah has the advantage on the down this week. Utah has the third-highest third-down conversion rate, and BYU's defense ranks 84th in opponent third-down percentage. Additionally, BYU was just 3-of-13 on third down against Arizona State last week.

Utah's offense too much for BYU's defense

Though Utah has scored 27 or fewer points in two of its last three games, the offense is still averaging 38.9 points per game. Utah ranks ninth nationally in total offense, eighth in rushing offense, and 32nd in passing offense. Led by quarterback Devon Dampier, the Utes have scored at least 31 points in six of their eight games and have won seven of their contests by at least eight.

While BYU ranks 29th in total defense, I wonder how long the unit can stand up in this matchup. Utah ranks seventh in time of possession, holding the ball for an average of 33:25 per game. BYU ranks 56th, averaging 30:29 of possession per game. BYU has lost the time-of-possession battle by at least 2:50 in each of its last two games.

Play to: Utah -7.5 (+100)

Score prediction: Utah 27, BYU 13
