My best Kentucky vs. Tennessee prediction focuses on how good both of these teams have been defensively this season. No. 13 Tennessee has been especially great at home, while No. 6 Kentucky has already gone toe-to-toe with and defeated two of the SEC's top-five scoring offenses.

Tennessee is favored by 5.5 points ahead of tonight's 6:15 p.m. game at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. The game will air on ESPN and stream on ESPN Unlimited.

Under 49.5 (-110 via FanDuel)

Tennessee is averaging 32.3 points per game, but has yet to score more than 26 points against an SEC opponent. The offense is averaging 23 points per game in conference games, with quarterback George MacIntyre starting the last four contests. MacIntyre has been decent, completing 67% of his passes and averaging 7.1 yards per attempt. But he has thrown three interceptions and just two touchdowns.

Tennessee is averaging the 16th-most rushing yards per game, racking up 213 per contest. However, Kentucky is allowing just 113.25 rushing yards per game, which ranks 30th nationally. DeSean Bishop has five 100-yard rushing games this season, but when Tennessee faced Texas, the nation's 24th-ranked rushing defense, he managed only 34 yards on 11 carries.

Kentucky ranks 73rd in yards allowed per game (362.6), but 49th in yards allowed per play (5.21). Additionally, Kentucky has played the two best SEC teams when it comes to yards per game. Despite both contests going to overtime, Kentucky held both LSU and South Carolina below their season averages, with LSU racking up 100 fewer yards than usual.

📡 SBR Edge: Defense will shine

Neither of these offenses are overly explosive, as Kentucky ranks 10th in the SEC in 10-yard plays and Tennessee ranks 14th. They both ranks 10th or worse in 20-yard and 30-yard plays as well. Defensively, when it comes to plays of 30 or more yards, Tennessee has allowed the second fewest and Kentucky has allowed the sixth fewest in the conference.

Kentucky's offense will struggle against Tennessee's defense

Tennessee ranks 17th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 16.3 points per game. The Volunteers have yet to allow more than 20 points in a home game, holding SEC opponents to an average of 14.7 points in three contests at Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee leads the SEC in passing yards allowed per game, giving up just 165.6. The Volunteers are also holding teams to 5.6 yards per attempt, and they've allowed just four passing touchdowns while intercepting eight passes.

Additionally, Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey has been sacked 17 times this season. I expect him to be under constant pressure on Saturday, as Tennessee leads the nation with 35 sacks.
