This week’s game between No. 6 Alabama and No. 14 Tennessee is one of three SEC matchups between ranked teams today. My Alabama vs. Tennessee prediction calls for a defensive struggle, given the Volunteers’ shaky quarterback situation and Alabama’s significant injuries on offense.

Kickoff from Neyland Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC). Alabama is a 7.5-point betting favorite.

Under 50.5 (-102 via DraftKings)

This total has plummeted from an opening number of 54.5 (which reached as high as 56.5 on the lookahead line at some of the top sports betting sites), but I’d play the Under down to 50.5 given what both teams are currently dealing with.

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel named George MacIntyre the starting quarterback for the second straight week. But MacIntyre hasn’t impressed with a combined 333 passing yards, one touchdown, and three turnovers in his last two games.

Meanwhile, Alabama will be without former freshman All-American wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams, who leads the team in receiving yards (415) and receiving touchdowns (four). Starting center Racin Delgatty is also questionable with a leg injury, and his absence would make it more difficult for quarterback Keelon Russell to break through a Tennessee defense that ranks 14th in EPA/Pass.

📡 SBR Edge: Tennessee lacks an explosive passing game

Tennessee ranks outside the top 120 offensively in EPA/Pass and pass play success rate.

Tennessee should find enough success on the ground

Alabama’s run defense held up considerably well against Georgia early, but fell apart late after the injury to defensive lineman Terrance Green.

The Crimson Tide held the Bulldogs to 49 yards and 3.3 yards per carry in the first half last week, but were gashed for 157 rushing yards and 6.5 yards per carry in the second half. If Green cannot play this week, Tennessee should enter the matchup with a clear emphasis on shortening the game and limiting possessions while building on a rushing attack that averages 208 yards per game.

I’m also confident in this wager because of Tennessee’s 32nd-ranked red zone defense, which should limit Alabama’s ability to generate a big lead.

Score prediction: Alabama 27, Tennessee 21
