Ranking the Top 5 2022-23 NFL Backup Quarterbacks: Eagles Can Soar and Score With Gardner Minshew

We rank the top five backup quarterbacks heading into the 2022-23 NFL season.

With the importance of evaluating quarterback play in the NFL futures markets and the growing popularity of two-quarterback fantasy football, taking a peek at how the top backup signal callers stack up across the league is important heading into the 2022 season.

After all, just 11 quarterbacks started all 17 games last season.

Here are our top five backup quarterbacks for the 2022-23 NFL season.

2022-23 NFL Backup Quarterback Rankings

1. Gardner Minshew, Philadelphia Eagles

With 22 career starts and a 3.42 touchdown-to-interception ratio, Minshew has proven to be a serviceable quarterback at the highest level. He'll also be commanding an offense with the best supporting cast of his career.

If Minshew is required to step in for No. 1 Jalen Hurts at any point this season, the Eagles offense should remain dangerous.

2. Teddy Bridgewater, Miami Dolphins

While his ceiling is capped, Bridgewater has succeeded at various stops in his career in a game-manager role. Miami also made significant upgrades to its offensive line during the offseason, and of course added game-breaking wide receiver Tyreek Hill, too. First-year head coach Mike McDaniel is another encouraging addition for the Dolphins.

3. Case Keenum, Buffalo Bills

Starting quarterback Josh Allen hasn’t missed a game in three seasons, so Keenum might be a longshot to see meaningful action in 2022. Still, if the Super Bowl favorites need him to start, it’s an ideal setup for him to be successful. The Buffalo offense has an embarrassment of riches at the skill positions.

4. Desmond Ridder, Atlanta Falcons

We expect veteran Marcus Mariota to be the Week 1 starter in Atlanta, but how long will the Falcons wait to see what they’ve added in Ridder? The 2022 third-round selection was a four-year starter for the Cincinnati Bearcats and offers a splash of dual-threat potential.

Atlanta is going to be bad, but at least there are two uber-talented targets to toss to in wide receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts.

5. Tyler Huntley, Baltimore Ravens

No. 1 quarterback Lamar Jackson has never started every game in a season in his career, so Huntley will probably be called on again in 2022. With Huntley’s rushing ability —– he averaged 6.3 yards per carry in 2021 — the offense doesn’t need to significantly alter, either. The backup went 1-3 last year as a starter, though, so it’s probably safe to project him as a modest-to-considerable downgrade for the former MVP.
