Teams from Group B will play their final matches of the group stage today, and USA (0-2-0) will need to defeat Iran (1-0-1) to advance to the round of 16. England (1-1-0) sits first in the group and will match up against Wales (0-1-1) creating a chance for each of the four teams to be eliminated. The first tiebreaker is goal differential which is led by England at +4 over USA at 0 and Iran and Wales tied at -2.

USA

After failing to qualify in 2018, the 16th-ranked USA (per FIFA Men’s Rankings) has begun the 2022 tournament with consecutive draws. The only scoring came in their 1-1 draw to the 19th-overall Wales, who ranks third of the four teams in a Group with the highest average world ranking of 15.

Timothy Weah scored their only goal in the 36th minute, but USA was unable to hold on to the lead allowing Gareth Bale to convert on a penalty late in the second half. In their most recent match this past Friday, goaltender Matt Turner made three saves in a 0-0 draw shutting out a fifth-ranked England club that finished fourth in 2018.

Iran

The 20th-ranked Iran responded to a 6-2 loss to England by defeating Wales 2-0. Rouzbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaeian each scored goals in extra time. Mehdi Taremi assisted the final goal and leads the team with two goals in the tournament.

Unlike USA, Iran does not necessarily need to win to advance, they just cannot lose. A tie would advance them past the group stage for the first time in team history as long as Wales does not win. A Wales win would only advance them under the scenario that USA and Iran draw. This would create a three-way tiebreaker where Wales would edge out Iran with them both currently sitting at a -2-goal differential. England is nearly guaranteed to advance with elimination only coming into play barring a 6-goal loss.

Betting Preview

USA (-105) is the betting favorite over Iran (+300) with the odds to draw sitting at +240. Iran won the only matchup between the two countries at the World Cup 2-1 back in 1998. The match will begin at 2:00 pm Eastern time.
