Of course, I knew about Sammy. I maybe didn't appreciate just how talented he was.

On the short list of most talented performers from the last 100 years. Try to think of a parallel.

Always liked Sammy Davis Jr. He had the best singing voice of the "Rat Pack" in my humble opinion. Was a patriot also, served his country in the U.S. Army and volunteered to perform in many USO shows for the troops in Vietnam. May he Rest In Peace.

Nice tribute, Oscar. Sammy started performing at AGE THREE. Amazing performer, and I like the way he acknowledged the crowd.

Like you say, a military veteran. Guy liked white women, which was frowned upon back then. Sammy said that caused him problems later in his career.

Sammy was a small guy (5'5") and he maintained his light weight (120 lbs). I actually think this helped him. Who else could give this kind of effort and not wear out over the course of a show?

Maybe the prodigiously talented Jamie Foxx.

But the difference between these two, and it's a big one, is that Sammy Davis, Jr. had genuine character. You might say he conformed to the code of the Rat Pack.


Meanwhile Foxx conforms to the code of contemporary Hollywood. Right now he's trying to hide his association with P Diddy. So the talent is there, but not much of a man.
