If people see a world leader undermining the judiciary, demonizing the press and stoking fear of outsiders, it's very natural to have them saying "Hey this looks like how dictatorships operate, this guy talks like a dictator does about annexing neighbors and invading other countries. Are we seeing the rise of an authoritarian dictatorship again here??".
