well you got Hendrix and Van Halen tied for first, then maybe Page and/or Clapton. Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King, Chuck Berry, Townsend, Beck and Richards. Angus Young (big fan). Don't forget Robert Johnson and Johnny Winter. Knopfler is badass for sure, so top 15-20 is fair.

I have Terry Kath in the top five.
Jimi once said "Terry is the only other guitarist I'd pay money to see"

I was a huge Chicago fan, not so much in the later years when that blowhard Peter Cetera took over.
I was a trombonist is grade school up until I was 20. My guy was James Pankow.
Their horn section was air tight.

          Duane Allman. Keith Richards.
Agree Kath never got his dues.
          Neither did Betts.

Some guitar critics say the greatest live solo ever.
Heard it 1000 times and will listen to it 1000 times more.
Kath on the axe was magic, and he performed his magic without effort.
It was second nature to him.

Any list without Prince and Lindsay Buckingham in the top 10 is invalid.

No because he was defeated by the Karate Kid in a guitar duel.

Prince doesn't get enough credit for his guitar abilities.

                                        - Money for Nothing

I actually saw the Brothers In Arms tour when I was in HS.
The other guitarist (Jack Sunni) is amazing as well.
John Illsley on bass, that trio was as good as it gets.

This Wembley live piece is incredible with all the hooks from the opening intro to the amazing Knopfler riffs at the 4:30 mark, and the guitar work from 5:00 on.

Even though it's more of a riff that a solo, that guitar work in "Whipping Post" is great.

                                                        So many great Knopfler solos.
And like I said earlier, Dire Straits other guitarist Jack Sunni is great too.

I was a huge Chicago fan, not so much in the later years when that blowhard Peter Cetera took over.
I was a trombonist is grade school up until I was 20. My guy was James Pankow.
Their horn section was air tight.
Band really went to crap after Kath's passing in the late 70's.
