Man wins more than $1.6 million from penny slot at California casino

VALLEY CENTER, Calif. — A man won more than $1.6 million after playing a penny slot at Valley View Casino & Hotel in California.

The man, identified as Robert S, was playing the IGT Wheel of Fortune Ultra Wheels penny slot when he hit it big, according to the casino.

“I’m still in shock. I couldn’t sleep for two days. I was up tossing and turning and thought they would call me and say the machine malfunctioned,” Robert said.

A photo taken after the big win shows Robert standing next to the machine.

Robert says he plans to invest the money for the future and is excited for his early retirement.

The win comes just weeks before the casino plans to open its $50 million expansion.

Interstate progressive. Been definitely well funded in losses to get that high. Casino is not out 1.6M, they'll be reimbursed. A portion of all spins on IGT machines are sent to IGT for these large across-US funded jackpots.

Spot on. Casino doesn’t pay a dime of the jackpot. They don’t even verify the winning hit. Igt tests it and pays the winner. Casino gets free publicity.

            Penny slot, yeah right.

He probably paid 3-5 bucks a pull, maybe more.

            But good on him.

Pretty sure min bet per spin on most penny slots to win the progressives is $3.

Shit, minimum bet on a penny slot for anything can be like 60 cents. Progressives easily 3-5 bucks.

60 cents, imagine walking up to a slot and seeing the $.50 denomination, with multiple credit plays possible.

A .50 cent machine can really add up.

They call em penny slots, but there's nothing penny about them.

                Quarter slots are cheaper.

Agreed. When I was in the Tropicana in AC two weeks ago, saw something shocking though. Bunch of guys in their 20s playing a series of penny slots...all of them betting 8 CENTS per spin. Never seen that low of a bet before on a slot.

                    8 cents?

Just wow. That's low. Now you can call it a penny slot...lol.

Is it ok if I speculate that many gambling websites and casinos do inside jobs where they set up someone they know to "win big" strictly for promotional purposes.

I think many bitcoin gambling websites do this, they make a new account and pay themselves to "win big" in order to promote their gambling platform.

Not with this one, they would mess with more local progressives or special promotions.

But it's a casino in expansion, they likely don't need the promotion you suggest.

Someone was going to hit the thing, somewhere.
