How come Vegas has a lower cost of living relatively compared to other cities?

A lot of other states like New Jersey have a much higher cost in housing.
Do people not want to live in Vegas? Isn't the economy supposed to be booming and growing rapidly etc?

Even when it was up, it was on the lower half price-wise.

Now you can still get really good deals. Housing market has not recovered yet, regardless of the city recovering.

And the house prices are lower in Vegas, there must not be much demand to live there.

If you're not in hospitality or service industry then there isn't a whole lot for you. That's pretty common in most tourist markets.

When I lived there rent was pretty low, it was about the same as Dallas. Electricity cheap, no state income tax. I also think weather has a lot to do with it, no demand to actually live there unless you are in the service industry because of how hot it gets.

The Colorado River is drying up like a lizard due to climate change and will not provide enough water for Vegas' growth. Water will be the most important and possibly the most devastating problem facing Las Vegas in the next five years.

The last time water levels were this low, in 2010, federal officials contemplated worst-case scenarios of forced cuts to Las Vegas—of both electricity and water. It didn’t happen then, but the drought this time around is worse.

The lake is now expected to reach a new record low of 1,080 feet by April 2015 and to cross the first trigger for downstream water cutbacks at 1,075 feet shortly thereafter. By summer 2015, the water supply to Las Vegas itself could be affected if an $817 million tunnel project—currently months behind schedule—isn’t yet completed.That project, conceived as a way to extend Lake Mead’s usefulness in the face of climate change, is designed to suck water from the lake all the way to the very bottom—a point long after even the turbines of Hoover Dam would have to shut down, possibly for good.

Common misconception that it all comes from the lake. We take from Utah, and a good portion from Navajo territories.

The place is a waste land.

Basically an American slum 10 miles in any direction around the strip, and most often a lot futher than 10 miles.

Summerlin and a few places in Henderson and outlying communities are nice. Out there in the hills, like all other places.

The city of Vegas itself is trash, IMO. Fukkin wasteland.

Las Vegas and Phoenix are two of the most unsustaniable cities in the country. Especially supposing a mass fallout scenario. Both cities import everything, to include their water. Cut off water to either city, and it's a barren wasteland.

As for just naturally running out of water, with infrastructure in place. Unlikely, and never in our lifetime. The Mormons tried to settle atop the largest underground water table in this country. It's as big as the entirety of Utah, but also extends largely into Nevada Wyoming and a small portion of Arizona. There is enough water there to serve those water barren states for a lot longer than we will ever be alive.

The original state the Mormons created actually enveloped the entire water table. Government chopped it up, but allowed Utah to stay atop the largest portion.
