I was thinking somewhat along similar lines. If the person(s) really wanted to do more damage, that finish line area had twice as many people in it two hours earlier, when the race's leaders were finishing. The federal investigators are damn good in this type of work, however, and they'll find the responsible parties. My thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of those who were impacted so horribly.

The Red Sox game ended like 45 minutes previously, and after that, all the people leave Fenway and go to watch the end of the race.

I would say it was right in the middle of the time when there was the most spectators.. so he did do the proper research.

There is no "solution." Fact of the matter is, an event like the Boston Marathon is extremely susceptible to attacks like this because of its "open-endedness." What are you going to do, pat down a million spectators? I've always worried much more about this or NYE at Times Square than a baseball or football games, where bags are checked and people can be patted down upon arrival. There's a lot more control to an enclosed situation. You can't "solve" this riddle, though. Sad, but that's reality.

I did hear some reporters talking yesterday and they did in fact say that if the bombs would have gone off when the first runners crossed the finish line that there would have been many more people in the area. 70% of the people that ran the race had already finished it prior to the bombs going off, so most people and their family/friends had already left.
