Bank Sending checks for collection agency

I don't want to go into too much detail but I was cashing a check today and the clerk told me before they deposit the check into my account the check will be sent to collection agency to get verified.

no its a payout from a sportsbook because its a foreign country check they are sending it to the collection agency

out for collections not to a collection agency. Since it's a foreign check they want to make sure it clears before the money is available in your account. some banks, like mine, suck. Takes me 45 days to clear a foreign check, but other banks are faster. Not sure what collections actually is but it's not a collection agency just where they send foreign checks to get the actual cash into this country and your bank account.

The teller who helped you musta made something up there buddy.

All banks have a collections department, which control just that, tyring to get money back for banks ie, loans & late payments.

As for the guy who said 45 days? Jesus dude get a new bank, no way it takes 45 days to get a check cleared, they are just giving you a hard time just to screw with you!

For them to say sending your check to collections makes no sense, unless you owed them money to begin with. But collections isnt even the ones who verify if the check is good.

exactly what this guy said- get a new bank...get an account at credit union - their collection period is about 7 to 14 days

Even a for foreign check shouldnt take more than 2 weeks tops!

Local checks 2 business days, out of state 5 business days.

Still doesnt explain why the check went to the collections department........?

It's basically a hold. Yea if banks are holding the check for more than a week or two and/or charging a fee, it's time to get a new bank.

I'm going to make an uneducated guess and say she misspoke or used some sort of language that she didn't understand. It sounds like it's just a hold.
