    Who hates buying a car..
Nothing I hate more than when I know I have to buy a penetrating car. A few years back I traded in my ford explorer for a Jeep Liberty. Not the fanciest SUV out there but decent mpg with mild comfort and 4x4. Got a great deal and was under Blue book for even trade in.

About two years ago the misses comes to me bugging me for a new car and I shot her the penetrating look because I had just barely got done dealing with this swine they call salesmen. But I gave in for my own sanity & took her shopping. We saw jetta's, we saw miata's, we even looked at Audi TT's. *(Yes if you own any of those you have a Vagina!, sorry pal live with it and learn to be Fabulous.)

She finally settled in on a mini cooper. Boys I'm a cheap ass, I don't pay depreciation for any reason on a asset that devalues constantly. So I made her get a used mini. Smart man right? No because like an idiot at the time I lived where there were no Mini Dealers.

BMW (Which owns mini) wants nothing to do with servicing this fukkin car. So we had to drive an hour to get it serviced each and every time. The combination of time/money/gas would make a routine service hell. So as the car was coming up on the majors, I said screw this.

We went right down to the closest dealership to buy a car. My eyes lit up when she test drove the new Scion FRS & the Subaru BRZ. Was it Christmas come early for bored? Nope boys, she ended up with a 2010 HONDA FIT..

Share with me your horror stories boys. Doesn't matter whether it was for you or for your wife. Make me feel better knowing I'm not the only one who hates this. Perhaps we can figure out why the hell women buy these Wierd ugly little cars..

Not a bad car at all Brock. They look very nice on the outside, good warranty etc. Is it comfortable?

Glad I'm not the only one. The idea has always bothered me. Here I'm paying you good money for something that will die, need regular maintenance, and cost me insurance to drive. All while getting taxed for the right to pay interest on a loan for it. But then again I'm a tight ass with money.

That new car smell is awesome but it prolly is smarter to buy a low mileage three yr old car.

Mayan my friend. It's not the haggling I hate, it's just the experience. The hours of waiting, the attempt at mind games. I also hate parting with money. But not since my 20's have I left a dealership upside down to my credit.

Brock I heard that complaint about a lot of hybrids how you can't hear them. I have found that comfort is all you should look for in a car. No where on the roads today can you be really speedy or race. So why bother with the huge engine or racing suspension. Give me a cloud riding on a cushion of air that has seat warmers for me any day.

Yes let someone else take the hit. I'm lucky to live in AZ. So many old people who buy cars only to garage them till they finally can't drive anymore period. So getting a low mileage car is no problem.

I bought a '06 Honda Civic in late '05 and I haven't had any problems with it at all. The warranty wasn't used/needed for anything. How much of the new car price is warranty?

Me too. People don't realize it but these snakes have to make deals. They are used to dealing with the public who has no idea how to negotiate. You have to play hardball with these guys.

Do your homework ahead of time.

Be ready to walk out the door if you don't get the deal you want.

                              Stand firm with your deal.

Act a little bit skittish and crazy. They don't know how to read you. Make them think you are a little nuts and will go buy the competitors car at any minute etc. I bought a car and they were out of the models I bought. So I came back a few days latter and they had another car with a few extra features that cost a little bit more. I was like ohhhhhhh fffffffffkkkkkkkk no. We are done. They eventually cave. You need to go a little crazy and show them you are the boss.

Buying and selling cars is shithouse. Had to upgrade from my fiance's Mitsubishi Lancer to a Holden Stationwagon because we were having our first child last year. Wasn't a lot of fun, but with my brother's help we got a really good price on both the sale and the new car.

I traded in my 2 year old Accord for an almost brand new BMW 335i twin turbo. Even though my car is amazing in every sense of the word i am a pussy when it comes to dealing with the sales guy so i'm sure i ended up overpaying by couple grand. I pretty much took it as it was at the price it was. So ya, i totally understand where you are coming from OP. I hate dealing with car sales people as well. They're def out to get ya, it's all about them making money for themselves. Funny enough as soon as i bought the car, i went back couple weeks later and the sales guy barely even recognized me or wanted to talk to me. Like i was a complete fucken stranger. I hated that.

Keep burying yourselves under all that debt, boys. You can always sell it for 1/3 of what you paid in a few years.

I love it! I go into the experience with a couple basic guidelines:

                                                  1) Always be willing to walk away. There are other dealerships and a car seat for every ass. Don't get attached to any car upfront. (This means if you're buying your significant others car take her to pick out what she likes then she needs to leave and go somewhere while the nitty gritty is worked. If you don't get the deal you want, walk away).

                                                  2) Someone is getting f*cked. Either you or the dealer. I make it my job to make sure it isn't me. I pull values, blue book / NADA and know wholesale, trade, retail values going in.

                                                  3) Don't trust a word out of their mouths. They're not "taking a loss" to sell at this price. Or, "not making any money" at this offer. That is bullshit. They're not making a deal that doesn't have them coming out making at least some money on a vehicle. Poor, poor car salesmen / dealership... can't even feed their family. Bullshit.

                                                  4) I build an adversarial relationship right upfront. I tell the salesman my philosophy, I don't take any bullshit, and if he (and his dealership) aren't willing to give me the deal that I expect then I'll walk away and go to the next dealership. I'm upfront with them about it. I'm not there to make friends, I'm there to pay the least I can for the vehicle I'm attempting to purchase. End of story.

Oh... and don't buy a damn brand new car unless you just like pissing away money. Buy one at least 2 model years old. Those 2 years are the biggest depreciation in the car's life... roughly 27-32% of its value is lost in those first 2 years.

vol bengal that last point USED to be true, but isn't any more. with rebates, incentives, etc (sign up for a gm card and they'll email you $2000 off a new car from time to time) and used car prices being what they are right now it's often less expensive per year to drive a new car.
for example, 3 years later that 42k enclave is still worth about 33k retail so we've driven the first 3 years and first 40,000 miles of a 42k car for 3k/year. much cheaper than the guy buying it now will be out for the next 3 years and we didn't have to worry about new tires/brakes/etc.

so like anything else you can't just make assumptions based on generalities, you have to do the math on the specific car you're looking at.

This is very good and accurate information to have while attempting to buy a car.

I walked in, told the guy what I wanted and what price I saw at another store.

He said they could do 50 bucks a more a month, I said "no, I figured this number with the interest rate"...He came back and said 40 bucks more a month after 5 minutes...I laughed and said I'll just go to another dealer with a finance department that knows how to use a calculator and can get me the price I want.

He then came back and said, ohh he was putting in a different interest rate and then gave me the car for what I wanted. About a half hour of haggling as he could tell I wasn't into playing games and knew he could give me the car for the price I wanted.

Signing all the papers and other bullshit after we got the price figured out was the long part which took around a fukkin hour.

I think I was at the dealership for 2 hours total time, between looking at a few different cars then haggling then signing. Wasn't terrible.

Wasn't much in the haggling, as I wasn't looking to steal from the guys. I knew what people paid online and others said that was a good price, so I went in and pretty much asked for the same. Once he stopped dicking me around with the interest rate thing after I clearly showed him on my phone the price per month should be 5XX...he finally went in and came back out and shook my hand.

Like I said, the paperwork on the other hand was a pain in the ass.
