Report: Jim Calhoun to announce retirement
University of Connecticut men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun will announce his retirement imminently, a source close to the coach tells Kevin Nathan, a reporter for Connecticut's NBC affiliate. A second source tells Nathan that Calhoun will talk to his players first before making an announcement. A source confirms to CBS Sports college basketball reporter Jeff Goodman that Calhoun will retire.

The 70-year-old Calhoun has won three national championships, most recently in 2011. Health problems have plagued the coach in recent years, and UConn faces a postseason ban this season for failing to maintain an NCAA academic requirement. Calhoun won more than 600 games at UConn. He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.

Calhoun was the coach of Northeastern University before coaching at UConn. He was born and raised in Braintree. Former Celtic Reggie Lewis played for Calhoun at Northeastern. Donyell Marshall, Ray Allen, Richard Hamilton, Rudy Gay, and Kemba Walker are among Calhoun's former players who have gone on to have NBA success.

Former UConn player and current assistant Kevin Ollie will be named interim head coach with a chance to earn the job full time, a source tells Kevin Duffy of the Connecticut Post.

Geez, this needed to happen. The kinda crap that is on UCONN right now, there is no good ending to his career if he stays.

I respect him as a coach, don't know much about him to form an opinion otherwise.

The timing is odd, however. Luckily for them, they've been training the new head coach for a while. UCONN will be fine once they ride this out.

              Yes, Olie is ready.

Game didn't pass him by, he coached his heart out two years ago.
Made Coach K his personal meat puppet, Huskies owned Duke.

He had surgery, stress was killing him, NCAA nailed the program for academic reasons, he made good men out of boys, too bad they didn't study hard.

Please, you make it sound like those excessive phone calls were Sandusky like.
When you talk cheating, you talk Penn St. UCONN didn't do anything that other schools did not do.

wait what? what does child molestation have to do with major rules violation? does that make all the broken rules ok because he didnt molest little boys?

you seem a little sensitive about it because you know its true

violations they got bagged for were the tip of the iceberg

Funny part being, there is a new rule that allows coaches no limit on calls during contact periods. Getting penalized for doing something that is now not only common place, but allowed under the rules currently.

                            I know.
But what ya going to do.
He had made some great men out of boys, like Ray Allen, but some of the kids he recruited just didn't want to go to class.
Fair or not, that fell on him, but know this, there is a reason whey they call Mr. Calhoun "the maker of men"

Actually, just stay the hell away from Sean Miller. Love that guy and wouldn't trade him for any coach in the nation.

Fukkin' coaching carousel BS. Just name Kevin Ollie full time head coach, to keep the speculation to a dull roar during the actual season.

turned UCONN into a powerhouse from NOTHING. how he turned a school in the middle of nowhere in CT into one of the top programs proves just how great of a coach he was
