    Who has wisdom to share about exercise equipment?
    Suppose you've got someone who wants to get rid of a beer belly and just generally tone things up. What is the best plan?

    Many products out there. Ab-lounges, Bowflexes, treadmills, freaky stationary bikes that bob and weave.

    Anything any good?

    Or do you have other effective strategies that don't involve paraphenalia?

      That video fitness made simple works good it has weights and aerobic exercise without having to spending lots of money just buys a simple bench and some dumbbells

        theres some pharmaceutical products out there that might help you out, as well as the exercise equipment like the bowflex.

          i have been kind of curious about getting an ablounge for a close friend of mine this summer...his b-day is soon. However....i am wondering if any of you have any experience with it...does it really work. Thanks....

            Just get active no matter what the activity. Try to start with 20 minute session of running, swimming, walking or whatever. Anything that gets your heart racing. Try to work up to five times a week and then bring your sessions up to 40 minutes. Depending on how much you have to lose, if you keep your eating the same, you will be looking at 1 to 2 pounds of weight lost per week. I think the gym is the best way to get this done, but really you could start by walking/running locally and see how committed you are first. Most machines never get used so get really committed before you make a purchase.

              When metabolism slows, many folks start to eat less, thinking that this will get rid of that belly that suddenly came out of nowhere. Only problem is that this doesn't speed up the metabolism! Shaq is significantly thinner now than a few months ago, because (if I remember correctly) he switched to 7 small meals a day. So rule 1: eat more often.

              As to exercise. The key here is simple. Do something you enjoy. It doesn't matter what it is. If you don't enjoy it, you're not going to do it. Period. If you're past 40 your shot at the 20 something girls is basically over, so this isn't about looks or a perfectly sculptured body, but about health. Let's face it. Young kids (I was one of them) build up because they want the chicks. And it works. That is some great motivation! Past 40 you can't count on that motivation to keep you going, so it has to come from somewhere else. If it ain't fun, you're not going to do it very regularly (or at all). It doesn't matter what the name of your exercise machine is. What sport did you most enjoy as a kid? That's your first option. Play it three times a week, work up a sweat, eat plenty, and don't worry about the Coronas.

                if you wanna trim and shape your stomach here is what i do

                situps, leg raises, and trunk twists

                when i started i could not do nearly as many as I can do now so don't get discouraged early on

                find a good number to do that is close to as many as you can do and hit that number every time...you should be breakin a bit of a sweat

                you only need to do 1 set of each but you need to do them consistently.....each AT LEAST 5 times a week

                it really takes no time at all to do this and you will see guaranteed results....but the key is consistency and not getting lazy

                bump your reps up when you feel they are getting too easy and take a day off if you feel your stomach needs it but it should only need it the first month a day or two here or there, after that you will be accustomed and strong

                if you do it consistently, it will not only shape the muscles but boost the metabolism and burn calories just sitting there

                the equipment for ab training is a waste of money...your desire will be the deciding factor on whether you get results or not

                the key is to do enough training to have an effect but not so much to burn you out and discourage yourself from having to go through a tough routine everyday

                    You can target muscle work, but you can't target fat loss. You can do situps or any ab work to the extreme and it will develope your abs, but only through general fat loss through less food and/or more excercise will you lose fat overall and thus in your stomach.

                        That seems like the best work out I have read in this thread. I need to ask my wife about it, see if she will let me take on this type of work out.

                        She dont like the 12 ounce curls I do.

                              Just to clarify: I was not starting this thread for my own benefit. I am happy with my state of physical fitness.

                              My general method is to get some exercise almost every day. Nothing fancy for me. My equipment is a bicyle and a basketball (and a local public court). I take the bike instead of the car for errands and I shoot hoops. Those are things I enjoy so that helps.

                              When fitness gets more difficult for me is in the winter when both those activities are no longer practical in the Great White North. That's when I have to force myself to keep active.
