Lead singers are all you need

I will submit to you I am not a musician but I will say there isnt any group, incl the stones, acdc, etc that couldnt be just as good as long as they had competent musicians replacing the original guitarists, drummers, etc that wouldn't sound just as good as long as the lead singer is the same. Educate me but I don't think Im wrong.

the singer doesn't even have to be good, he just has to be decent but that that "new thing" no one else has.

Steve Howe (guitarist) from YES comes to mind. None others at this time

The songwriting is the most important, IMO. Substitute a good singer and good musicians and the band would still be good.

It does depend on songwriting, so if the other musicians write the songs the singer is not as important. But regarding AC/DC, fans at the shows chant for Angus, not Brian.

Just as good - not a chance
Just as successful - I see your point

Zeppelin comes to mind as an exception to your point but I think you're probably right in most cases (just as successful, not just as good)

Do I understand you correctly in that if Robert Plant was not the front man for the Zep that they would have been just as successful?
If so, NO Freaking way. Robert Plant RULZ.
If I misunderstood you, I apologize. Not trying to be an asshole.

Van Halen and Led Zep are the only two I can think of off the top of my head.

The way I understand the question is, The lead singer is what makes a band popular or good.

Even if you got rid of Keith Richards and the rest of the band, The Stones would have still been just as popular cuz of Mick being the frontman. I agree in most cases. Although I think if Van Halen had lost Eddie they wouldn't have been as popular..same with Jimmy Page.

No, I'm taking it the other way. For one, my understanding is that the original poster would be talking about Page, Jones, and Bonham being replaced and being just as successful. For two, I said Zeppelin is the exception to this.

    No, you need 2 things:

    1) A good lead singer
    2) A good song writer

Dave Gahan and Martin Gore of Depeche Mode is a great duo!

Zeppelin came to mind for me too right away. I'd argue Black Sabbath as well.

Ozzy has different guitarists and drummers every year.
