He takes his religion seriously, wants to integrate it with the rest of his life. I can see how it might be perceived as obnoxious, but I'd much rather see what he does than all the people who are spiritual just to fabricate some greater purpose for their life, or worse yet, follow only a religion's rules that they agree with and disregard the rest.
