Polish President and now world class hockey team. You would think the elite would "avoid" this kind of incident. Certainly it shouldn't happen with such regularity. Ofc it's even worse in various CIS countries which have 0 airlines authorized to even fly into the EU for example.

Demitra, Vasicek, Skrastins... could have been Salei too, but luckily for him, he was already in Minsk where the plane was heading to...

Now being reported that the player passed away in surgery. Not sure if the crew member survived or not, but it appears every player passed away.

Very sad. Sorry to hear this.
The US sports media is pathetic. ESPN is eulogizing, but they're eulogizing Peyton Manning.
A Russian jet carrying a KHL ice hockey team crashed into a river bank Wednesday while taking off in western Russia, killing at least 43 people and leaving two others critically injured, officials said.
Passenger list from Russian sources:
Coaches: Brad McCrimmon, Igor Korolev, Alexander Karpovtsev, Nikolai Krivonosov, Jorma Valtonen.
Goalies: Stefan Liv, Alexander Vyukhin.
Defence: Pavel Tarkhanov, Karel Rachůnek, Robert Ditrich, Karlis Skrastins, Michail Baladnin, Vitalij Anikeyenko, Marat Kalimulin, Jurij Urichev.
Forwards: Alexander Galimov, Daniil Sobchenko, Jan Marek, Ivan Tkachenko, Alexander Vasiunov, Gennady Churilov, Nikita Klyukin, Alexander Kalyanin, Sergei Ostapchuk, Pavol Demitra, Josef Vašíček, Artyom Jarchuk, Alexander Romanovskyi, Andrej Kiryukhin.
Sad to see those guys go. I remember watching McCrimmon for the B's and Flyers a long time ago. Demitra was one of my favourite NHLers, too. Bunch of other good kids and vets. R.I.P.

I can't imagine what Salei and the rest of the team (GMs, physios, docs, etc) are feeling right now. Much more so their families. Just sad.

Skrastins played for my Stars last year. Guy was getting a little age on him, but was still a dependable defenseman.
