Coach...the dude was the godfather of racing. I think the reason people still mourn his death so much is that he died at the Superbowl of Racing and the way he died. There have been a thousand accidents much worse than his, and many race fans are till in disbelief that he's gone. The dude's ghost hangs over Daytona when you go there and many fans can't let go.

I, like most Euros, am by no means a fan of Nascar but certainly respected Earnhardt Sr.

It was, to a large extent, his death that saw the HANS device made mandatory even in Formula 1. Since then at least one driver's life have been saved as a direct result.

That's what I heard too that he was difficult to get along with in real life. Sometimes I think that's why Dale Jr. is such a nice guy because he got the beatdown (verbally, not physically) from his old man and that shaped him up to be that way.

Yeah he was blocking for Michael Waltrip helping him get the win. Waltrip had not won a race in 462 races, it was Waltrip's first race for his new boss Dale Earnhardt.

Nascar gets as many viewers in the US as the NBA does.

Dale JR was also up there, and I thought the teammate was up there as well...I thought it was all 4 of them in contention and SR was staying back holding people off and was just going to make a run on the final lap up.... which is where it all went horribly wrong.

Hard to believe its 10 years ago. When he hit the wall and Waltrip then came around and won, we just went and did something else. the way he hit the wall compared to a lot of other wrecks it just didn't look that bad. Later that evening when we heard he had died in that crash, sweethook is right, part of NASCAR died that day, it certainly has not been the same since. 3
