Good point. Hang on a minute, though (note that this is just from the past 3 pages of ONE thread):

Sure, and all that stuff is true.

And yes, I am an "intellectual mind" I am drawn to learning and listening and reading and intellectually elevating myself. Yet, i am not on here flaunting what I know. The trick is being able to relate to the audience and present information is a constructive and efficient manner. I can do that and so can guys like Pags, Taco you can't and DJ can't either. It's all part of being a good teacher.

But seemingly you're not. You say you get solid evaluations but the students hand in crap. Teaching isn't a popularlarity contest - you're there to teach them not to get 5/5 on the course evaluations. I they hand in crap then you're simply not teaching them to the required standard - but I'm sure you'll never to manage to work that out.

I'm kind of an arrogant prick, but I only recall a handful of teachers I ever had that I didn't think I was smarter than.

The most brilliant economics teacher I ever had had the worst course evaluations in the department. It was my favorite class I took in undergrad.

Now I am getting criticized from a guy who has never taken a course I teach.

They hand in crap b/c almost all undergraduates hand in crap, that's just the way it goes. All professors and grad students do is mock undergraduates and they do so for a reason. Most undergradudates don't give a shit about school, they are just there to party and get drunk. I am not there to teach them how to write and to make them interested in the material...that's up to them, not me.

In a lot of cases, the teachers not tenured or on tenure track are pretty poor. They're only teaching but for the lack of decent alternatives.

Me too. The best two econ professors in the department are the most universally hated and have the worse course evaluations - as I said, it's about teaching the students, not being the popular guy/gal on campus.

Some professors, especially at research universities, only care about their research so their teaching suffers. It's one of the downfalls of the university system, but a number of universities these days are placing more emphasis on teaching.

bear, what if one of these 1000x stupider -than-you undergrad that you taught came up to you one day and told you off b/c you were making fun of him w/ your other holier-than-thou buddies/professors? (as you already confessed that you did)

                        see any parallels here?

                              grade school mentality.

and lawyers and doctors that do pro-bono work do it because they suck.
