What I was trying to illustrate is DJ's hypocrisy in giving me an "A-" on something he says is the most important thing in sports betting and then giving himself an A++++ when he says the exact same thing. When he was called out on it he gave some lame ass reason why he says it's an A-. He even apologized for it and I accepted his apology. Case closed....

First I don't teach stats. Second my students are a 10000 times smarter than you. Sorry, but we had this argument long ago. R2 will go up as long as you add any independent variable even if that IV is randomly generated. Basically, any additional independent variable cannot lower the R2, and is virtually certain to incrase it at least somewhat. The reality is if IVs are added until their number equals n-1, then R2 = 1.0. What do you want me to state the obvious that if you add 84562 IVs to a model it won't increase R2 b/c we may have more IVs than our sample size??? Are you that stupid you don't know that or you need someone to spell that out for you?

I was trying to explain to a poster in that thread who needed advice on why R2 is a statistic that should be interpreted with caution, then of course you throw your routine hissy fit about some technical detail. Does it sound like I don't know anything about statistics or research design?

Nothing against greek here, just I see this statement from time to time on the forum. Of course there are some really good handicappers that post their picks on a daily basis and that is a real blessing to many. I guess it comes down to a definition of sharp. After all, at least from what I have read, a sharp is an intelligent bettor. I would break that down further and just say anyone who makes more than he/she loses is a Sharp. We all know steam players will most likely have a positive cash flow. Of course they can't really post picks. Now, if, let say someone has a certain style of handicapping and it gives them an edge and this edge can be studied and followed, well then that Sharp wouldn't be very smart if he posted how it all worked for him. I have a feeling if his success can be duplicated over and over then line makers may figure out a way to circumvent this. It has happen in the past and I am sure it will happen in the future.

So, SBR Forums may only have a few "Sharps" those that post picks and a few that don't, but all and all, this is a great place to learn what not to do in the Sports Betting Arena and that, is most of the battle to becoming successful.

ummmm...nothing has changed, a little pay raise I guess but not much. Just b/c I am a "teacher" doesn't mean i am a university professor like some have erroneously concluded on here. I am a graduate student. My funding is through teaching at the university like hundreds of thousands of other grads students in this country. The university pays me instead of getting a professor b/c I am cheaper...that's how the American education system is set up at big universities

For example, Ken Jennings is not intelligent at all he's just a trivia buff who memorized a bunch of info. I can confidently say that I am "smarter" than he is. Intelligence is more closely conceputually related to learning. I am pretty sure I am going the learning route as opposed to memorization route.

yeah, they aren't handing in great papers and I even grade super easy too. I am actually a really really good teacher I routinely get solid evaluations, everything else in grad school I am just borderline.

Thanks Crazyl, you and I know that I am both pretty laid back and open to ideas and suggestion and good conversation. You'll find me routinely talking about games and offering opinions and insights in a constructive manner. Take a look at Taco, almost 5,000 posts and maybe 200-300 are directly related to games. DJ talks more sports, but mostly to criticize bets people make. Most guys here are just interested in entertainment and don't care what number they bet into, he hasn't grasped that yet.

Lot of guys on here are very confrontational and obsessed with demonstrating their intelligence. Most guys I am dealing with here are very anti-social. No way they behave like this in real life I would hope.
