What would happen if a team just continually took delay of game penalties to the point that the ball couldn't back up any further? Could a team just prolong the game forever?

#4Purpose just to be an ass....maybe some low division team needs attention and wants to pull off the longest in regulation game time or something. It's a good question.Comment -

#6No it isn't, this makes no sense. This would never happen. You could draw attention to your team by punting every time you get the ball or attempting 70 yard field goals all the time too but it nobody would ever do this.Originally posted by Dark HorseIf with religion you mean belief system, your belief system is your religion. #7Happens all the time whenever I leave my Madden '02 game unattended...Not sure if it can be done in legit games or even Madden games from this decade though.Comment -

Let's say Team A makes a 10 minute 95 yard drive to Team B 1 yard line and gets stopped changing possessions on downs. Team B's defense would be exhausted at this point. Team B get's the ball back and goes 3 and out, giving their defense only 2 minutes of rest. If I were the coach I might take a few dozen delay of game penalties to allow my defense some rest.
Coaches do strange things all the time. I recall one instance where a coach kept kicking off purposely offside to run the clock. The clock would start at kickoff and the team would have to re-kick.Comment -

#9Does the clock always stop after a delay of game? I distinctly remember the clock continuing to run after the ball is ready to play if the clock was running before the delay of game. I remember because I always seemed to be on the over when this happened. I always thought that didn't make sense because a team could run serious time off the clock. I wonder if the ref could call unsportsmanlike conduct?Comment -

#11i have a better question that i've always wanted to know the answer to.. lets see if i can get it here at sbr.
it's 4th and goal from 1 yd line. defense is going for the sack, so they jump real early and they are offside.. so half the distance now.. it's now on the half yd line.. they do it again, they jump quick.. they are offside. half the distance again and are now on the 1/4 yd line. they do this 4 more times in a row to go for sack.. will all they do is keep going half the distance till they are on the 1/64th yd line??? will they penalize them 5 yds on the kickoff or will they move them closer to the goal line?
i never understood this..Comment -

#14that can't be or they'd do it forever.. so if they do it 343 times in a row, will they just keep getting them closer and closer, like to the 1/1,000,000th yd line.. they'd do it all the time cause it dont hurt them the extra millimeter, but they'd have a good chance at a sack and a 6 yd loss.
there must be a rule to this.. i doubt it's just automatic 1st down.Comment -

#15If they did it when there was 10 seconds or less left, the game would end as the penalty would cause a 10-second run off. However, if you just got out of the 2 minute warning and just fukked around getting delay after delay...I'm not really sure what would happen.Comment -

#19You really can't say that it makes no sense. I can think of one very good reason to do this.
So give up all that field position just so you can rest your defense? Before you do that play your 2nd string defense, maybe they get lucky and stop the other team.Comment
