Yes, Emily. The game has changed dramatically.

I'd say that it started w/ the Steel Curtain defense of the 1970s. Pittsburgh's defense was so dominant. Scoring average was down, league started w/ two rule changes:

    1) Tightening up the chuck-zone from 10 to 5 yards. Call it the Mel Blount Rule.
    2) Relaxing the Offensive Line blocking constraints. It used to be that you really couldn't extend your arms outside the frame of the body, and you couldn't use your hands. Those actions constituted Holding.

From that point forward, 90% of the rule changes have been pro-offense. As for the tackling, it's gone way too far. Defenders are not in position too often where they can make form-tackles.

Count the # of hits/tackles that are now outlawed:
    1) Standard late hit.
    2) Hitting QB and dropping your weight on him.
    3) QB hit below the knees. The Tom Brady rule.
    4) Used to be that the Hit Zone was shoulders to the knees. Now, you have to make sure the offensive player won't be deemed "defenseless."
    5) Horse Collar tackle.
    6) And the new one you point out. The Hip Drop tackle. Honestly, had never heard that one b4.

The average career of players like RBs and WRs is 3-4 years. The reason is the LBs of today weigh like the DL from 50 years ago so when they hit they permantly injure the players.

No they are stronger but the weight isn't a comparable thing. More speed nowadays so the impact is more. Few players were as strong as Bob Lilly.

Yes stronger and faster. But if you are just comparing size and weight the average lineman from 60s-70s was 6'-3" & 250 lbs which is what the linebackers size and weight is currently.

But the size of RBs and WRs hasn't changed much as they need to be fast so they can't put on a lot of muscle so they get punished when they get hit by LBs.

This type of tackle occurs when the defender grabs the ball carrier from behind and pulls them down while dropping their own body weight to the ground. This type of tackle resulted in Cowboys running back Tony Pollard suffering a serious ankle injury.

Although the NFL is trying to enforce safety, it's pretty evident the players think this tackle should be allowed to stay.

Jevon Holland of the Dolphins said, "It's getting outta hand now."

"Absolutely ridiculous," Trent Taylor of the Bengals said.

Adrian Amos of the Packers tweeted, "they about to have us getting dragged down the field like we trying to tackle Spike from the Little Giants."

Richard Sherman believes banning the "hip-drop tackle" would be overkill.
"A desperation wrap up trying to prevent a ball carrier from gaining extra yards," Sherman tweeted. "There isn't one player saying 'hey I’m about to drop my weight on his ankle when I tackle him.' Defense is Hard enough with the rules about roughing the QB and interference. This would be ."

Can we first get rid of these ridiculous pass interference calls before we change other rules?

I, personally, think these tackles should be penalized. All the defenders weight on a lower extremity is just asking for a season-ending injury.

It’s football. Physical game. Those who play know it. There’s a risk taken when you play. They can make all the rules they want, injuries will still happen.

Football only sport where someone weighing two times as you is allowed to make a tackle and land on you with all the weight.

I agree with you 100%. You gotta turn your head and look for the ball or it's pass interference every time is complete BS!. That rule is a joke.

Some contact should be allowed also and the point of any catch with your head not turned towards the ball.

Only holding or grabbing of the arms or an early hit should be pass interference.
