    I think like Tony does.
He likes sabermetrics but thinks it's OK for the bench manager to throw out the book every now and then and make a move by his gut.

This might sound crazy but the Rays should fire Cash and hire Ozzie Guillen. He would've let Snell go 130 pitches last night if need be considering how long he let his starters go in the 2005 WS.

The late Billy Martin would have left Snell in until his arm fell off.

So who was 71-year-old Dusty Baker’s last manager as a player? Chicago White Sox manager Tony LaRussa, 76, of course.

Guy doesn't have the team makeup that he needs to win.

In years past he's had 2 starters that are good for 18+ wins per year in Oak + Stl PLUS the 2 premier sluggers of the day surrounded by scrappy dudes who get on base and play small ball and a borderline HOF catcher in both spots.

He has none of this in Chicago.

Who is going to be managing the team when he takes naps between innings on afternoon games?

No argument there..guy was the most overrated mgr. up until Lou Piniella. He had a really good young staff with the A's in the early 80's with Langford, Kingman, Keough, McCatty & Norris that he pretty much ran into the ground overusing them so much.

I don't think Martin was overrated...he won EVERYWHERE he went and often with subpar or just outright young players.

Wish the Twins would have stuck w him '69 + but he punched the GM out in a hotel bar fight so that was over....

I respect LaRussa But damn, he started there 41 years ago. Remember Jack McKeon was 80 for the Marlins. Just think at minimum, get some new blood in MLB.

Martin took over crap teams and instantly turned them into winners.
One of the best there ever was.

LaRussa won't have the steroid edge he had in Oakland or the advantage of being the only good team in a small market division like he had in St. Louis. He's coming back to get the 36 wins he needs for second on the all time wins list.

I'm not gonna deny the guy was a baseball genius but he was nothing more than a short term fix. Besides that 5 year stint with the Yanks in the late 70s he never lasted more than 3 years with any team. Billy was the original Dusty Baker with all the young arms he ruined. Even besides that A's staff, Mickey Lolich would've been a HOF if not for Billy's overuse and even Catfish Hunter was washed up by the time he was 31. Granted his team's temporarily improved but at the cost of several players careers.

Are you sure it was the GM I remember reading it was one of his own pitchers, Dave Boswell who he knocked out in the alley behind a sports bar giving him 20 stitches on his face

    Boswell was the instigator.

I think the subtraction of Don Cooper as pitching coach is most likely a way larger positive impact than the negative of Larussa as Manager.

Anyone article that portrays Billy Martin as the cool-headed one in a fight is absolutely full of shit; Martin started every fight he was ever in. He wouldn't last today, the players would wring his neck like Don Baylor threatened to do and he wouldn't be able to hire a "coach" (Willie Horton) just to stay between them.

Did you not read the part where Boswell pretty much said "It's my fault, I started the fight"

You don't think it's a case of a player not wanting to piss off the manager? Keep in mind that this was pre-free agency; players had no leverage back then.

Boswell was defiant when Martin told him to take a lap with the rest of the team.
    He said no.

Martin asked him a second time to take a lap and if you don't I'm benching you.
Once again Boswell pretty much said FU to Martin.

You would have to be an idiot to think Martin will back down from a fight if called out.
He called out Martin, and Martin obliged because Martin doesn't back down from anybody.

Boswell should have just took the lap with his teammates, and kept his mouth shut.

I played HS and college baseball you don't do that to your manager and coaches.
It was a simple request, take a lap with your teammates.

White Sox manager Tony La Russa was charged with driving under the influence after a February arrest in Arizona, ESPN reported Monday, citing court records.

The case was filed Oct. 28 — one day before the Sox hired La Russa.

    Really?

EVERYBODY knows it's illegal to drink and drive drunk.

But as long as the drunk does not crash into a house or a wall or kill/hurt somebody it should be a slap on the wrist?
