NFL Player News - Week of 8/10/20

    Bengals | A.J. Green impressing
Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green impressed teammates with his athleticism last week. 'We're just running routes and haven't gone full speed against the defense,' said tight end C.J. Uzomah, who had to laugh at sophomore tight end Drew Sample's reaction when they ran routes. 'Drew only saw him last year for, what, that first practice? He said, 'I forgot how explosive he is.' I told him, 'You haven't seen the half of it yet.''

Packers | Allen Lazard the favorite for WR2
Green Bay Packers WR Allen Lazard is the overwhelming favorite to start opposite of WR Davante Adams. Lazard was second on the team with 13 receptions on third down last year.

Football Team | Bryce Love one to watch

49ers | Jordan Reed officially part of SF
Free-agent TE Jordan Reed (Football Team) officially signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, Aug. 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Don't let this change your view of George Kittle. Reed could help patch up the injuries and inexperience at slot receiver as much as he could force his way into two tight end sets and take a few targets away from Kittle.

Football Team | Logan Thomas ready to practice
Washington Football Team TE Logan Thomas was activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday, Aug. 9.
Footballguys view: Thomas has a chance to lead the Washington tight ends in receptions. The former quarterback has flashed excellent hands and athleticism in a small sample with the Lions. Leading the Washington tight end group is still probably not a path to fantasy relevance, but Thomas is worth monitoring in deep tight end premium leagues.

Colts | Indy finale for T.Y. Hilton?
Indianapolis Colts WR T.Y. Hilton is entering the final season of a five-year, $65 million contract. 'If this is my last year (in Indianapolis), I will give it all I've got,' Hilton said recently in an interview with an Indianapolis TV station.
Footballguys view: The offense goes through Hilton, or at least the passing game does. He's in line for a productive season and should quickly become QB Philip Rivers favorite target. That means good things for Fantasy GMs who invest in Hilton...and Hilton as he's investing in himself. A big season could mean another big-money deal for the veteran who will turn 31-years old this year.

    T.Y. Hilton player page

Bengals | A.J. Green focused on health
Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green has dedicated much of his offseason training to injury avoidance, including working with a former acquaintance, Reza Hesam, who co-founded Adapt Physical Therapy, which focuses on injury prevention in addition to working on performance.
Footballguys view: Green is playing on the one-year franchise tag for the Bengals. He wants to stay with the team and wants to continue with them for another four years. In order to do that, Green needs to stay healthy and play at a high level. That's his usual level so long as he's at or near full strength.

    A.J. Green player page

Raiders | Derek Carr primed for best season?
Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr is poised to have the best season of his career as he'll be playing with the best supporting cast of his career, including RB Josh Jacobs, TE Darren Waller and rookie WR Henry Ruggs III, in the opinion of NFl.com analyst Adam Rank.
Footballguys view: Carr may be poised to do that but first he must win the starting job. The Raiders went out and added QB Marcus Mariota to the roster this offsason. Carr and Mariota will compete for the starting job in training camp. Both will have those great weapons around to throw to, although Carr is likely the frontrunner due to his experience with the team as the starter.

49ers | George Kittle not making progress in talks
San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle has not made much progress in contract extension talks with the 49ers at this point, according to his agent.
Footballguys view: Kittle is in the final year of his rookie contract but he's not going anywhere. We're expecting him to reset the tight end market when a new contract is done.

Dolphins | Chester Rogers may be slot receiver
Miami Dolphins WR Chester Rogers is considered the leading candidate for the slot receiver job but will have to compete with at least WR Isaiah Ford and WR Gary Jennings for the job.
Footballguys view: Rogers has experience at the position and is a good option at the slot when healthy. Do not forget about Jakeem Grant in this competition either as he might be the best of the bunch behind DeVante Parker and Preston Williams.

Patriots | Sony Michel not guaranteed for Week 1
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel's (foot) status for the start of the regular season is uncertain at this point.
Footballguys view: This is one of the reasons why the Patriots signed veteran free agent RB Lamar Miller on Monday. Michel is still recovering from foot surgery and is currently on the PUP list. If he doesn't show enough progress, the team could put him on PUP to begin the regular season.
    Link to story
    Sony Michel player page

Patriots | Lamar Miller agrees to deal with Pats
Free-agent RB Lamar Miller (Texans) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the New England Patriots Monday, Aug. 10. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: The Damien Harris hype train is going to lose a few people upon this news. Miller didn't play in 2019 as he tore his ACL and MCL a year ago. The Patriots are getting quality veteran experience with this move and insurance in the event that Sony Michel struggles with injury. Michel is currently on the PUP list as he continues to recover from offseason foot surgery.
    Link to story
    Lamar Miller player page

Saints | Alvin Kamara opens up about knee injury
New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara told reporters Monday, Aug. 10, that he 'tore his knee' in Week 6 against the Jacksonville Jaguars and 'was dealing with it the whole season.' He also added that it did not require surgery, but he spent a lot of time in the offseason rehabbing it.
Footballguys view: Kamara didn't look like himself in 2019 while playing around 75 percent healthy (at best). If fully healthy, Kamara should produce at the expected level and score more touchdowns compared to last year when he only hit pay dirt six times. His skill set and health status make Kamara a top-4 pick for Fantasy GMs no matter the format.

Raiders | Hunter Renfrow losing primary slot duties?
Adding more context to a previous report, Las Vegas Raiders WR Henry Ruggs III is expected to begin his pro career as the primary slot receiver ahead of Hunter Renfrow, according to comments made by offensive coordinator Greg Olson.'We'll start with Ruggs III in the slot and do some things with Ruggs. But those guys (Ruggs and Bryan Edwards) are very multiple in what they can do and that's the goal is to be able to move all of them around to different spots; the one, two or three position at the wide receiver,' Olson said recently.
Footballguys view: Ruggs has a ton of speed and was the team's first-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft. He can operate from the slot or on the outside. The team might want to have him begin in the slot where he can get off the line cleanly and quickly. While Ruggs is playing the slot, it does take Renfrow out of that spot. As a rookie in 2019, Renfrow was targeted 71 times, catching 49 passes for 605 yards and four touchdowns.
    Link to story
    Hunter Renfrow player page

Bengals | Joe Mixon poised for great things in 2020?
Cincinnati Bengals RB Joe Mixon 'could be as well-positioned as Christian McCaffrey was a year ago to explode,' according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora. According to La Canfora, head coach Zac Taylor 'truly began to understand and appreciate' Mixon's ability over the second half of last season and intends to lean on him heavily in 2020.
Footballguys view: The Bengals offense projects to be more exciting with rookie no.1 overall pick QB Joe Burrow at the helm. Burrow is a great passer but expect the team to run the ball with Mixon early and often to take the pressure off the rookie. Mixon has been a top-12 fantasy running back each of the last two seasons, and that will once again be the case. He's a late first- or early second-round pick in fantasy drafts right now.

Colts | T.Y. Hilton feeling better
Indianapolis Colts WR T.Y. Hilton (hamstring) is reportedly feeling good and believes he has 'maybe a couple more days' before he is ready to practice, although the team's training staff may hold him back for a week just to be on the safe side.
Footballguys view: Hilton is looking to stay healthy and show off with his new QB Philip Rivers. As the Colts top option, Hilton could outperform his current ADP of WR24 (5.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    Thursday Update

Eagles | Greg Ward Jr. to have a role
Philadelphia Eagles WR Greg Ward Jr. is in the 'starting mix,' according to head coach Doug Pederson.
    Link to story

Steelers | James Conner never considered opting out
Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner said Wednesday, Aug. 12, he never considered opting out, despite the fact he's a high-risk player as a cancer survivor. 'Going on four years now removed from cancer,' Conner said. 'I didn't really have to talk to my family. It was never a concern for me. I've been healthy for years now. It was an easy decision for me. I never really gave much thought to it. I'm healthy and my immune system is back healthy. I'm not worried.'
Footballguys view: Conner is a high-risk player but wanted to get out there and play. He'll be the lead back for the Steelers this year but we could see guys like Anthony McFarland mixed in as Pittsburgh might use more of a RBBC than some think.

    Seahawks | Will Dissly practices
Seattle Seahawks TE Will Dissly (Achilles) practiced Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Footballguys view: Dissly has flashed talent but has gotten hurt each of the last two years. We'll see if he can stay healthy and how he works behind veteran free agent addition Greg Olsen in 2020.

Cardinals | Kelly Bryant to work out for Arizona
Undrafted free-agent QB Kelly Bryant will visit the Arizona Cardinals for a workout, according to a source Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Footballguys view: Bryant was a transfer from Clemson who finished his college career at Missouri. He followed up Drew Lock for the Tigers but did not produce at a high level. He's a dual-threat quarterback at the next level...if he can latch on with a team.
    Link to story

Packers | Malik Turner officially signed
Updating a previous story, free-agent WR Malik Turner (Seahawks) officially signed an undisclosed contract with the Green Bay Packers Wednesday, Aug. 12. S Frankie Griffin was released to make room on the roster.
    Link to story

Raiders | Josh Jacobs targeting 60 receptions
Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs said Wednesday, Aug. 12, his goal for 2020 is to catch 'at least 60 balls.'
Footballguys view: Jacobs has the ability to be a three-down back in the NFL. The Raiders offense is going to flow through the second-year back. He's got a current ADP of RB8 (1.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.
    Link to story
    Josh Jacobs player page

    Raiders | Tyrell Williams improving
Las Vegas Raiders WR Tyrell Williams (feet) is 'over the hump' with his plantar fasciitis issue but is continuing to do daily maintenance.
Footballguys view: Williams is not a no.1 receiver and he's got to be healthy. Last year, Williams saw top coverage as the no.1 receiver for the Raiders and he was banged up. Now healthy and the no.2 receiver, Williams should be a more consistent performer...but not terribly exciting for Fantasy GMs.
    Link to story
    Tyrell Williams player page

Raiders | Nelson Agholor to play big role?
Las Vegas Raiders WR Nelson Agholor will 'do enough in this offense to make fantasy owners of (Henry) Ruggs, (Tyrell) Williams and (Hunter) Renfrow upset,' according to Vic Tafur of The Athletic Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Footballguys view: Let's not get too excited about Agholor just yet. Ruggs should be the top receiver for the Raiders this year, operating (most of the time?) from the slot. Williams should be the second-leading receiver so long as he can stay healthy. Renfrow is a great slot receiver but Ruggs could steal a lot of time from him there. That leaves Agholor as potentially another outside receiver. Fantasy GMs should not get too excited about anyone in this group except for Ruggs.

    Nelson Agholor player page

Bills | Cole Beasley cleared to practice
Buffalo Bills WR Cole Beasley (back) passed his physical Wednesday, Aug. 12, and has been activated from the Active/Non-Football Injury list.
Footballguys view: Beasley is good to go for padded practices later this week. He's got 'what the heck' flex appeal in PPR leagues. The Bills passing game should go through WRs Stefon Diggs and John Brown. Beasley will clean up after that in the slot.
    Link to story
    Cole Beasley player page

49ers | SF, George Kittle making progress
San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle has made healthy progress in contract extension talks with the 49ers, but the two sides have not reached an agreement at this point, according to sources.
Footballguys view: The two sides continue to work on a new contract for Kittle. Not only will Kittle likely be the highest-paid tight end in the league, he could approach wide receiver money with his new contract. We'll see if they can get something done before the start of the regular season.
    Link to story
    George Kittle player page

Cowboys | Dak Prescott optimistic about contract
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott said he is optimistic that he will be able to reach a long-term agreement with the Cowboys after the 2020 season.
Footballguys view: Prescott is playing on the one-year franchise tag in 2020. The two sides were unable to come to an agreement before the mid-July deadline. Prescott's deal won't be what Patrick Mahomes got from the Chiefs, but it will make him one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the league.
    Link to story
    Dak Prescott player page

Falcons | Todd Gurley may be limited early
Atlanta Falcons RB Todd Gurley (knee) may be limited during practice at the start of training camp since he has dealt with a knee injury.
Footballguys view: Gurley is a seasoned veteran who doesn't need a ton of work in training camp. It's just wise for the Falcons to ease him into action as they prepare for the regular season. His current ADP is RB15 (2.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.
    Link to story
    Todd Gurley player page

Jets | Le'Veon Bell looking to play at lower weight
New York Jets RB Le'Veon Bell said he wants to stay around 210 to 215 pounds this season and that he improved his conditioning this offseason.
Footballguys view: Bell wants to get his game back on track. He said he feels the best he has in his career and expects a lot from himself in 2020. Bell should produce as a RB2 or at least a flex play for Fantasy GMs this year.
    Link to story
    Le'Veon Bell player page

49ers | Tavon Austin to work out for SF
Free-agent WR Tavon Austin (Cowboys) is scheduled to work out for the San Francisco 49ers and hopes to sign with the team, according to sources.
Footballguys view: The 49ers WR corps is a bit thin due to injury and opting out. Austin can work from all over the field and on special teams. We'll see if he can find a new home with the 49ers or another team in the near future.

Bengals | John Ross leaves for family matter
Cincinnati Bengals WR John Ross left camp Wednesday, Aug. 12, after his young son and the boy's mother tested positive for COVID-19, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Ross is putting family first as he should. We should see him back in action by the time the regular season rolls around. Ross has speed, speed and more speed to his game. He'll compete for the no.3 spot on the depth chart behind A.J. Green and Tyler Boyd.

    Saturday Update

Raiders | Bryan Edwards earning trust Fri Aug 14, 10:42 PM
Las Vegas Raiders WR Bryan Edwards is 'someone where there's just a trust,' according to QB Derek Carr. 'He reminds me of Davante [Adams],' Carr said. 'Someone where there's just a trust. I can throw it up one-on-one on those 50-50 balls. He's a guy that can not only use his physicality in the route, but also when he's in the air.'

Texans | Jordan Thomas catches eye of coach
Houston Texans TE Jordan M. Thomas drew praise from head coach Bill O'Brien during training camp. 'Jordan came back in great shape,' O'Brien said. 'He's really lost a lot of weight, running good, catching the ball, blocking, so he's got to keep it going.'

Saints | Jared Cook wants more
New Orleans Saints TE Jared Cook said he believes he left some plays on the field last season. 'There are still some plays on the film that haunt me and of course, we're still going back over those plays, and running through them, but they're still plays that haunt me that I still wish I could have back,' Cook said.

Saints | Deonte Harris on COVID list
New Orleans Saints WR Deonte Harris was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, Aug. 14.
Footballguys view: Harris was supposed to get a larger role on offense this year after he flashed as a returner and in small doses on offense last year. Hopefully he won't miss the majority of the padded practices starting up.
    Link to story

Lions | Trevor Siemian works out
Free-agent QB Trevor Siemian (Jets) worked out for the Detroit Lions Friday, Aug. 14.
Footballguys view: The Lions signed Chase Daniel this offseason and also have David Blough, who is now game-tested, so this is probably just updating emergency lists with a fresh look.

Broncos | Jerry Jeudy on field with second team

Broncos | DaeSean Hamilton works with starters
Denver Broncos WR DaeSean Hamilton worked with the first-team offense during practice Friday, Aug. 14.
Footballguys view: The Broncos are having Hamilton and Tim Patrick run with the first as part of a you have to earn it program for first round pick Jerry Jeudy and second round KJ Hamler. If the draft picks don't start getting most or all of the first team snaps soon then it will be time to lower their redraft stock.

Browns | Baker Mayfield feeling rejuvenated
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield said Friday, Aug. 14, he 'lost myself' in 2019 and started doubting himself after a couple of sub-par performances. Mayfield, though, said Friday that's in the past. 'In a much better state, mentally, physically. Just ready to roll,' Mayfield told reporters at training camp. 'Back to where I need to be to be the leader.'
Footballguys view: Mayfield will be in a much more tightly structured offense that should set him up with deep play action passes to create success to build on. His fantasy prospects aren't bright, but this year should get his career back on track.

49ers | Jordan Reed contract terms
Updating a previous report, San Francisco TE Jordan Reed signed a one-year, $1.05 million contract. The deal also includes up to $750,000 in playing-time incentives.
Footballguys view: Reed gives the 49ers a receiving dimension in two tight end sets, but shouldn't be seen as a threat to George Kittle's top two tight end value. If the 49ers can get even a half of a season out of him while the younger wide receivers are getting up to speed and Deebo Samuel is healing from his broken foot, it will be a good deal.

Patriots | Lamar Miller contract terms
Updating previous report, New England Patriots RB Lamar Miller received a one-year, $1.05 million contract that includes $200,000 in guarantees with $1.5 million also available in 'achievable' incentives.
Footballguys view: 200,000 doesn't ensure that Miller will make the team, and if Sony Michel rallies to be ready for work Week 1, the team would probably be happy to release him. Damien Harris will get the first shot to lead the backfield in practice with Miller on the PUP list.

49ers | Tavon Austin, JJ Nelson expected to sign
Free agents WRs Tavon Austin (Cowboys) and JJ Nelson (Raiders) are expected to sign Friday, Aug. 14, with the San Francisco 49ers, pending results of physicals, per a league source.
Footballguys view: The 49ers clearly want to add speed since they lost Travis Benjamin to an opt out and Richie James probably won't be ready to begin the regular season. Either of these vets could make the team over Dante Pettis, who is having a quiet camp so far.

49ers | Tavon Austin, JJ Nelson officially signed
Free-agent WR Tavon Austin (Cowboys) and WR JJ Nelson (Raiders) signed with the San Francisco 49ers Saturday, Aug. 15. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The team also waived TE Daniel Helm and waived WR Chris X. Thompson (undisclosed) with an injury designation.
Footballguys view: The 49ers are in need of wide receiver help due to opting out and injuries at the position. Austin can work all over field as a rushing and receiving threat if he makes the team. Nelson has speed to get downfield in a hurry. Both of these veterans have to be considered long-shots to make the 53-man roster.

Giants | Evan Engram likes new offense
New York Giants TE Evan Engram said recently he's impressed with the team's new offensive coaches and system. 'It's a good offense in my eyes,' Engram said. 'All the details we have to know and things like that is going to help us when we get them all down. I'm really excited about the opportunity to work with coach (Jason) Garrett and coach (Freddie) Kitchens and all the other coaches on the offensive side. We're putting in a lot of hard work right now and just have to continue to do that. Keep working for the good things to happen.'
Footballguys view: Engram can be a fantasy factor in 2020 if he can stay healthy. He's one of the most athletic move tight ends in the NFL but has struggled with injuries during his pro career. Engram has a current ADP of TE7 (7.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Texans | Will Fuller adds strength
Houston Texans WR Will Fuller has added strength and some extra muscle this offseason and has reported to camp at 190 pounds, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.
Footballguys view: Fuller is hoping the extra strength helps his durability. He is a speedy receiver who can get by defenders in a hurry. Fuller also has a strong connection with QB Deshaun Watson, and it would help the Texans passing game greatly (especially since they traded away WR DeAndre Hopkins) if Fuller can stay healthy.

Ravens | Patience not a J.K. Dobbins virtue
Baltimore Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins said in a recent video media interview that he's planning to push for as much playing time as possible in his rookie season. 'I mean, I don't know how patient I can be,' Dobbins said. 'My thing is, I'm just trying to work hard. I'm going to try to play. I'm going to try to get on the field some way, somehow. My goal ain't to be patient. I was not that taught that in college. You know, don't be patient. Take advantage of your opportunities. I'm not saying that I'm going to start or anything, but I feel like if I just work hard enough and show the coaches that I can play at this level, then I'll be on the field. So my goal is to help the team win the Super Bowl (by) not sitting on the bench.'
Footballguys view: Dobbins is a fantastic talent at the running back position and he can play on all three downs. Veteran Mark Ingram sits atop the depth chart for the Ravens right now, but he's set to split time with the rookie. Dobbins may push Ingram for that top spot this year, but the Ravens are still likely to use those two in some form of RBBC.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson wearing knee brace
Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) was photographed wearing a brace on his right knee during the team's first practice of training camp Friday, Aug. 14. It is not believed, though, that Johnson has reinjured the knee he had a procedure on during the 2019 season.
Footballguys view: Johnson was supposed to take over in the Lions backfield but that hasn't happened over the last couple of seasons due to injury. Now, Johnson will compete with rookie RB D'Andre Swift for the starting job in training camp.

Bears | Allen Robinson excelled while contested
Chicago Bears WR Allen Robinson finished third among wide receivers with a 92.7 Pro Football Focus grade on contested catches in 2019.
Footballguys view: Robinson was able to make plays with poor quarterback play. If the Bears can find a way for Mitchell Trubisky to play better (or if Nick Foles wins the job and plays well) then that only means better things for Robinson. Fantasy GMs see Robinson as a low-end WR1 with upside in 2020. His current ADP is WR11 (3.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.
