NFL Player News - Week of 8/3/20

Football Team | Logan Thomas put on COVID list last week
Washington Football Team TE Logan Thomas was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday, July 29.

Football Team | WAS to sign Dontrelle Inman
Free-agent WR Dontrelle Inman (Colts) is expected to sign with the Washington Football Team Monday, Aug. 3, pending a physical.
Footballguys view: The veteran receiver split 2019 between the Charger and the Colts catching 12 passes for 181 yards combined in seven games. When healthy, Inman still has good size and the speed to be a threat down the field. He's competing for a reserve roster spot with Washington and is no lock for the 53-man roster.

    Dolphins | Preston Williams cleared
Miami Dolphins WR Preston Williams (knee) has been cleared for football activities, according to head coach Brian Flores. 'He's running and lifting,' Flores said. He needs to learn new, small things in the offense, according to Flores.
Footballguys view: More good news for the Dolphins here. Williams looked really good last year as a rookie before going down with a knee injury in Week 8. In 2019, Williams had the second most targets among Dolphins WRs and third most on the team as a whole, despite missing half the season. This year, Williams has upside as a late-round stash for your bench. His current ADP is WR56 (13.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Pats interested in Delanie Walker
Free-agent TE Delanie Walker (Titans) has received interest from the New England Patriots.
Footballguys view: We could see Walker latching on with a team like the Patriots. The veteran may not be the player he used to be, but he could provide veteran depth for a young tight end room like the Patriots have. They've got two rookies (Devin Asiasi, Dalton Keene) who are competing in camp to establish a pecking order this season.

    Delanie Walker player page

Bears | Artavis Pierce cleared to return
Chicago Bears RB Artavis Pierce was activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday, Aug. 2. The Bears also waived RB Napoleon Maxwell.
Footballguys view: Pierce is a speed back who can catch passes. They picked him up as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon State this year and he's a long shot to make the final roster. Pierce could be bound for the practice squad if he impresses in practice.
    Link to story

Patriots | Mohamed Sanu placed on PUP list
New England Patriots WR Mohamed Sanu (undisclosed) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday, Aug. 2, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Sanu shed his walking boot in May, so this is more of a procedural move than anything. Reports indicate there is little chance that he would miss time when the season kicks off. Sanu is looking to bounce back after an injury-marred 2019 debut with the Patriots. We like him as a late-round add for wide receiver depth (and upside) in PPR leagues.

Patriots | PUP list for Sony Michel
New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (foot) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday, Aug. 2, according to a source.
Footballguys view: This is a situation that Fantasy GMs need to keep an eye on. Michel is on the PUP list now because there is a possibility that he'll need to be on the PUP list at the start of the regular season. He had foot surgery in May and has been on the road to recovery since then. Damien Harris would get a larger opportunity if Michel was limited or had to miss time in 2020.
    Link to story
    Sony Michel player page

Jaguars | Four players placed on COVID list
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Ryquell Armstead, TE Charles Jones, WR Michael Walker and S Andrew Wingard were placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday, Aug. 2.
Footballguys view: Armstead is the primary backup to Leonard Fournette. He's a handcuff for Fantasy GMs if you've got the roster space on the bench. His absence could help former Nebraska UDFA Devine Ozigbo impress in practice. Veteran Chris Thompson is also there as a change-of-pace back.
    Link to story
    Ryquell Armstead player page

Jaguars | Gardner Minshew on COVID list
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday, Aug. 2.
Footballguys view: Minshew is the second starting quarterback (Matthew Stafford) to be put on the COVID/Reserve list. The COVID-19 list is designated for players who test positive for the virus or have been in contact with someone who has the virus. Minshew will quarantine for a couple of weeks and have to pass a test before he can practice. Josh Dobbs and Mike Glennon are the two QBs vying for the backup job in 2020.
    Link to story
    Gardner Minshew player page

Raiders | Jeremy Hill joins Raiders
Free-agent RB Jeremy Hill (Patriots) signed with the Las Vegas Raiders Sunday, Aug. 2. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: It's officially official now. Hill has not seen an NFL field for almost two years and is not a lock for the 53-man roster. He's a power back with little nuance to his running style. Hill can also be a capable pass-catcher out of the backfield. He's competing for a reserve spot behind starter Josh Jacobs.
    Link to story
    Jeremy Hill player page

Steelers | James Washington on COVID list
Pittsburgh Steelers WR James Washington was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday, Aug. 2.
Footballguys view: The COVID-19 list is designated for players who test positive for the virus or have been in contact with someone who has the virus. Washington started 10 games in 2019 and looked good in his breakout year. He was the team's leader in receiving yards with 735 yards on 44 catches. With WR JuJu Smith-Schuster returning healthy, Washington could see a dip in his production.
    Link to story
    James Washington player page

Steelers | Jaylen Samuels placed on COVID list
Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jaylen Samuels was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday, Aug. 2.
Footballguys view: The COVID-19 list is designated for players who test positive for the virus or have been in contact with someone who has the virus. Samuels is a jack-of-all-trades at the running back position and was no.2 on the Steelers last year with 47 receptions. If used properly, Samuels can be more efficient as a runner and make more plays as a receiver. The Steelers added Anthony McFarland (Maryland) in the 2020 NFL draft and the rookie could cut into Samuels role behind starter James Conner.

    Jaylen Samuels player page

Browns | Jarvis Landry starts camp on PUP list
Cleveland Browns WR Jarvis Landry (hip) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday, Aug. 2.
Footballguys view: Doing this means the Browns could put Landry on the PUP list to begin the regular season if need be. That doesn't seem to be the case, and the team is likely just being cautious with the veteran receiver here. Landry is still expected to return from the hip surgery he had in February before the start of the regular season.

Baseball is fine, 27 teams have played continuously and Phillies/Marlins are now back. Seems they have good protocols in place.

    Tuesday Update

Football Team | Dontrelle Inman official
Updating a previous report, free-agent WR Dontrelle Inman (Colts) officially signed an undisclosed deal with the Washington Football team. He'll compete for the fourth wide receiver spot with WR Antonio Gandy-Golden, according to beat writer JP Finlay.

Seahawks | Will Dissly making good progress
Seattle Seahawks TE Will Dissly (Achilles) is making good progress in his recovery but will be eased back into practice, according to head coach Pete Carroll. Dissly passed his physical at the start of training camp.
Footballguys view: Dissly has certainly flashed talent in his pro career. However, he's just appeared in 10 games (scoring six touchdowns) in two seasons. Injuries have prevented Dissly from playing up to his full potential. The Seahawks have added veteran Greg Olsen this offseason to lead the way at the position. Dissly is a high-value reserve for the team but has limited fantasy value for 2020. He's a good dynasty prospect if healthy and starting...so long as this latest injury doesn't rob him of too much athleticism.

    Jets | Quincy Enunwa released
New York Jets WR Quincy Enunwa was released Monday, Aug. 3.
Footballguys view: No surprise here as the veteran receiver was put on the PUP list back in May. Enunwa has made just 12 NFL appearances since the end of the 2016 season. It will be difficult for him to latch on with a new team at this point in his career.

    Thursday Update

Raiders | Henry Ruggs III to start in slot
Las Vegas Raiders WR Henry Ruggs III will start in the slot, according to offensive coordinator Greg Olson. Ruggs played 218 snaps there over the last two seasons in college, according to Pro Football Focus.
    Link to story

Jets | Competition for Denzel Mims?
New York Jets WR Denzel Mims' lack of reps during the abbreviated offseason could force general manager Joe Douglas to add a veteran receiver before the start of the season, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com.
    Link to story

49ers | Travis Benjamin added to reserve
Updating a previous story, San Francisco 49ers WR Travis Benjamin was officially placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Footballguys view: Benjamin didn't do much for the 49ers last year and he's a player with a declining skill set. With him opting out, the 49ers might consider any free agents that are on the open market.
    Link to story
    Travis Benjamin player page

Dolphins | Albert Wilson officially on reserve list
Updating a previous story, Miami Dolphins WR Albert Wilson was officially placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Footballguys view: Wilson is now the second Dolphins WR to opt out this year, joining Allen Hurns in the decision to miss the 2020 season. The team is getting thinner at the position. DeVante Parker and Preston Williams are the top two receivers with Jakeem Grant and Isaiah Ford as the No.3 and No.4 options.
    Link to story
    Albert Wilson player page

Dolphins | Preston Williams being eased back
Miami Dolphins WR Preston Williams (knee) is being eased back this offseason and a team source said there's no assurance he will be available for Week 1, but the Dolphins are cautiously optimistic.
Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Williams was looking good last year as an undrafted rookie out of Colorado State. A knee injury cut his rookie season short after eight games, and he had knee surgery in November. Williams has been on the road to recovery ever since then and might have to be eased in at the start of the regular season. He may not be 100 percent until the midway point of this season, and Williams may not be 100 percent healthy this year at all.
    Link to story
    Preston Williams player page

Browns | Austin Hooper put in work with Baker Mayfield
Cleveland Browns TE Austin Hooper lived part of the summer with QB Baker Mayfield while the two worked out together.
Footballguys view: Hooper was the big free agent tight end this year and the Browns were able to secure his services. The Browns spent a lot of resources this offseason to improve their offense and hopefully that leads to better numbers from Mayfield as he suffered through a sophomore slump in 2019.
    Link to story

Bills | Stefon Diggs tweaks contract
Buffalo Bills WR Stefon Diggs restructured his contract Tuesday, Aug. 4, according to a source. He'll receive an extra $3.3 million in 2020, an extra $7.7 million in guaranteed money but a decrease of $300,000 cash in 2021 and a drop from $25.55 million to $22.67 million in 2022-23 cash.
Footballguys view: Diggs is going to be the primary Bills receiver in 2020. He's been working this offseason to establish chemistry with QB Josh Allen. If Allen can play better and throw with better accuracy, then Diggs could pay off for Fantasy GMs as a WR2 with upside. It's going to be a wild ride if you want to start Diggs on a weekly basis.
    Link to story
    Stefon Diggs player page

Buccaneers | LeSean McCoy may be part of passing game
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB LeSean McCoy probably will have a role in the passing game this season, according to head coach Bruce Arians.
Footballguys view: Arians has already said that Ronald Jones is the starting running back. That means McCoy is working for a change-of-pace role behind Jones. While Jones is a RB3 for Fantasy GMs, McCoy may only work out as a 'what the heck' flex play but only in super deep leagues.
    Link to story
    LeSean McCoy player page

Raiders | Jeremy Hill let go
Las Vegas Raiders RB Jeremy Hill was released Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Footballguys view: Well that didn't last long. Hill has been out of the league for two years but somehow found a deal with the Raiders last week. Now, he's back on the open market and will struggle to find another deal.

Buccaneers | Scott Miller adds weight
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Scott Miller has added around 10 pounds since the end of last season, according to head coach Bruce Arians.
    Link to story

Buccaneers | Tyler Johnson dealing with injury
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Tyler Johnson (undisclosed) has been limited during practice because of an undisclosed injury.
Footballguys view: Johnson was the team's fifth-round pick out of Minnesota and he's got intriguing upside in dynasty formats. He's a big slot receiver with the strength to run through arm tackles. He'll compete for a spot in the pecking order behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
    Link to story

Buccaneers | Ronald Jones will be starting RB
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones will be the main ball carrier for the Buccaneers this season, according to head coach Bruce Arians.
Footballguys view: Jones finished as the no.27 fantasy running back last year and has similar upside this season. Defenses are going to be focused on slowing down QB Tom Brady and those receiving weapons, so Jones could clean up on the ground if he plays up to his potential. He has a current ADP of RB30 (6.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.
    Link to story
    Ronald Jones II player page

Jets | Le'Veon Bell ready to play
New York Jets RB Le'Veon Bell is in great shape and is extremely motivated to play this season, according to head coach Adam Gase.
Footballguys view: Bell is motivated and has been working out like a mad man according to reports. He's set to be the centerpiece of the Jets offense and Fantasy GMs are looking for him to have a bounce-back season. It's been a few years since Bell produce at the expected level. He's got a current ADP of RB20 (3.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.
    Link to story
    Le'Veon Bell player page

Ravens | Marquise Brown bulks up
Baltimore Ravens WR Marquise Brown said he added 23 pounds this offseason and currently weighs 180 pounds.
Footballguys view: That's a lot of weight to add and just be 180 pounds but Brown was never a big guy anyway. Brown is incredibly explosive and dangerous in the open field. If healthy, Brown can be a favorite target of QB Lamar Jackson in 2020.
    Link to story
    Marquise Brown player page

    Lions | Kenny Golladay activated
Detroit Lions WR Kenny Golladay was activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Footballguys view: That didn't last long. Golladay was on the list for about a week and now he's back in action. Fantasy GMs should consider him a WR1 in 2020, especially if Matthew Stafford can stay healthy all season long.

Jets | Josh Doctson put on reserve list
Updating a previous story, New York Jets WR Josh Doctson was placed on the Reserve/Opt-Out list Thursday, Aug. 6.
Footballguys view: Doctson was a first-round pick for Washington in the 2016 NFL draft but has bounced around the league. He played one game for the Vikings in 2019 and was no lock for the 53-man roster with the Jets.

Dolphins | Miami talking to receivers
Free-agent WRs Ricardo Louis (Dolphins) and Chester Rogers (Colts) have been contacted and put through physicals by the Miami Dolphins, according to a source Thursday, Aug. 6.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Dolphins have had two receivers opt out (Albert Wilson, Allen Hurns) so their WR corps is getting a bit thin. Add in the fact that Preston Williams is still on the road to recovery from the knee injury he suffered mid-season in 2019, and you can see how the Dolphins would be in the market for more wide receivers. We'll see if any of these guys get signed.

Rams | Robert Woods has had some contract talks
Los Angeles Rams WR Robert Woods said he has had preliminary contract extension talks with the Rams and wants to finish his career with Los Angeles.
Footballguys view: Woods is signed for a bargain price for no.1 wide receivers. When he signed his five-year, $34 million contract in 2017 Woods was not considered the no.1 wideout ...and over the last three seasons he has performed as such. His current contract has two years remaining, but Woods salary ranks 37th among all wide receivers in terms of annual average salary. We'll see if the two sides can find a way to get a new contract done.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon looking sharp
San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) has looked sharp catching passes out of the backfield during training camp, according to QB Jimmy Garoppolo. 'Even just throwing routes on air this offseason, he runs them differently than most running backs and he has a feel that's like a receiver, but he feels space like a quarterback,' Garoppolo said.

Football Team | Derrius Guice arrested
Washington Football Team RB Derrius Guice was arrested Friday, Aug. 7, and has been charged with one count of felony strangulation, three counts of assault and battery and one count of destruction of property.
Footballguys view: The strangulation count is especially troubling. Washington has had a very rough year in public relations and Ron Rivera has been trusted with a culture reset, so Guice has been released. Adrian Peterson moves up a few rounds on our draft boards, but is still not essential, while Guice becomes an end of the draft pick who could still spend the whole season on the commissioner's exempt list - if he finds a new team, which is a big if.

Bengals | Joe Mixon may see more targets
Cincinnati Bengals RB Joe Mixon may receive a bigger role in the passing game this season, according to offensive coordinator Brian Callahan.
Footballguys view: Mixon should have had a larger role in the passing game last year but was still less involved than many of his lead back peers. If the Bengals offense improves with the addition of Joe Burrow, Jonah Williams, and return of AJ Green, and Mixon gets more targets, he could be a top five fantasy running back this year.

Ravens | James Proche may be returner
Baltimore Ravens WR James Proche is considered the leading candidate for the punt returner job this season. WR Willie Snead and Marquise Brown are also options for the job.
Footballguys view: Proche is a quality slot receiver with top notch hands, but he doesn't provide the speed third round pick Devin Duvernay brings to the table, so special teams is his best path to making the team.

Texans | Kenny Stills placed on NFI list
Houston Texans WR Kenny Stills (illness) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Illness list Friday, Aug. 7.
Footballguys view: Stills probably would have been traded this offseason, but he has a seven million dollar price tag. He may end up being the odd man out in the passing offense with the addition of Brandin Cooks and Randall Cobb, but an injury or two to a wide receiver would make him relevant again.
    Link to story

Ravens | Trace McSorley has good chance to make team
Baltimore Ravens QB Trace McSorley likely will make the final roster since John Harbaugh said the team plans to keep three quarterbacks on the active roster.
Footballguys view: McSorley is part of the "Taysom Hill" wave of third quarterbacks with top-end athleticism and ability to be used in multiple ways, but in the Ravens offense he could actually be a viable backup if Lamar Jackson and Robert Griffin III both go down.
    Link to story

Falcons | Calvin Ridley impresses coach
Atlanta Falcons WR Calvin Ridley has 'really put in a good offseason ... he's bigger, stronger,' Falcons head coach Dan Quinn said Friday, Aug. 7, in a media conference call.
Footballguys view: Ridley is still going two rounds or so after Julio Jones, but has an outside shot at becoming the most productive Falcons receiver this year. He's part of a wide receiver group that is so deep in fantasy drafts that it has made many good names stay available rounds after they should be.
    Link to story

Giants | Sterling Shepard looking to lead
New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard is entering the 2020 season as the longest-tenured Giant, and said Friday, Aug. 7, in a Zoom media conference call that 'I might have to shake the 'young' Shep.' He added that he plans to set a 'good example' for his younger teammates.
Footballguys view: The Giants have quite the arsenal of targets for Daniel Jones if everyone can stay healthy. In Shepard's case, that means avoiding concussions after they were a problem for him last year. He has played and produced better than his cheap ADP and could be a hit if he stays healthy and Evan Engram does not.

Patriots | Cam Newton proclaims self healthy
New England Patriots QB Cam Newton on Friday, Aug. 7, declared himself fully ready for training camp. 'At this particular time, I'm full go,' Newton said in a video conference call.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham eager for competition
New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham on Friday, Aug. 7, said it's 'been a wild ride this offseason ... I'm happy to get rolling.' He also added that he's looking forward to the 'competition' with QBs Cam Newton and Brian Hoyer.
Footballguys view: Stidham has the advantage of having a year experience in Josh McDaniels' system over Cam Newton, but a healthy Newton should have no trouble pulling away from him. Newton's ADP is still a little depressed with the uncertainty of a quarterback battle, but that should be resolved once padded practices start.

Bengals | A.J. Green working to avoid injuries
Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green said his training regiment is designed to help him avoid the injuries he has dealt with the last couple of seasons. 'We did more stuff in testing those ankles, strengthen those ankles, strengthen these toes, learning how to land better,' Green said. 'Just little things like that I didn't do in previous years.'

Lions | T.J. Hockenson back on roster
Detroit Lions TE T.J. Hockenson was activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday, Aug. 8.
Footballguys view: Hockenson had some big-time flashes last year as a rookie. He's got the talent to be one of the best tight ends in the league, but Hockenson needs to stay healhty and gel further with QB Matthew Stafford. Hockenson played in 12 games last year before an ankle injury ended his first pro season. In mid-June, Hockenson was back to running routes but was not 100 percent healthy. We'll know more about his status as camp rolls on. Hockenson has breakout potential in 2020 with a current ADP of TE14 (13.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Browns | Jarvis Landry ready to return
Cleveland Browns WR Jarvis Landry (hip) was activated from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, Aug. 8.
Footballguys view: The move to put Landry on the PUP list was mostly procedural as he was always expected to be ready for the start of the regular season. Landry had hip surgery back in February and has been on the road to recovery since then. If QB Baker Mayfield has a bounce-back year in 2020 it's good news for all receivers in the passing game. Landry is a steady flex play in PPR leagues, coming off the board at WR33 (7.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Dolphins | Miami adding Ricardo Louis
Free-agent WR Ricardo Louis (Dolphins) agreed to terms with the Miami Dolphins Saturday, Aug. 8, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: The Dolphins had two receivers (Allen Hurns, Albert Wilson) opt out for the 2020 season. Adding Louis for veteran depth makes sense. Louis was signed to a one-year deal (as an ERFA) earlier this year but was cut back in July. A neck injury (2018) and knee injury (2019) has kept Louis off the field for the last two regular seasons. Once thought of as a long-shot for the 53-man roster, his chances are better now.

Bills | Devin Singletary a breakout candidate
Buffalo Bills RB Devin Singletary is a strong Year 2 breakout candidate, according to NFL.com analyst Maurice Jones-Drew. 'Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll will give his second-year back plenty of opportunities in both the run and pass games after watching Singletary excel between the tackles and as a pass catcher,' Jones-Drew wrote. 'With the entire Bills' offense trending in the right direction, I'm projecting that Singletary will get 250 carries, 1,300 scrimmage yards and eight to 10 TDs in Year 2.'
Footballguys view: Singletary had a strong rookie season in 2019. He's got great balance and vision as a runner, and Singletary knows how to pick up extra yardage after contact. With the Bills passing offense likely improved, that will continue to take away the attention of opposing defenses. Reports earlier this offseason indicate the Bills want to get Singletary more involved in the passing game this season. His current ADP (RB25, 4.08) could prove to be quite the value pick if he breaks out in 2020.

Packers | Aaron Rodgers in for long haul?
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers isn't going anywhere else any time soon, head coach Matt LaFleur said recently. 'Right now, most importantly, Aaron's our quarterback and I see him here for a really long time,' LaFleur said. 'And however long that is, I don't think anybody knows. Nothing's guaranteed in this league but I feel so lucky to be able to work with him on a daily basis. I don't see that changing for a really long time.'
Footballguys view: When the team selected QB Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, and not pluck a wide receiver from this potentially historic class, did not really indicate Rodgers is there for the long haul. We'll see how he meshes with LaFleur's offense in the second season together as Rodgers continues to play at a high level. We'll also monitor the progress of Love as he gets used to the pro game as that is a big jump from Utah State to the NFL. Rodgers may be another one in a long line of great quarterbacks who end their career somewhere other than the team that drafted him.

He is a very solid player, good pickup for Dallas.
