No worries man, very valid question and happy to chuck some thoughts out here.
While I've been around here and in the industry for a long time, It was hard to take this industry seriously with the only wagering options being Vegas or shady offshore books.
Not that there's anything wrong with offshore or Vegas, but the Vegas expenditure on a weekend can seriously eat into profits (If you're wagering less than 200-300k it's really not worth it). The offshore side has always been hit or miss on if you're going to get paid, even with bitcoin becoming as popular as it has (and the industry has gotten much better in the last few years).
Once Christy got the ball rolling with challenging PAPSA on the federal level, it wasn't hard to see that the expense of wagering on sports was about to come down significantly for me. So I've been grinding the last few years, getting models and data ready. I have an IT background and also have invested regularly for the past 10 years in markets so getting data, modeling data, and poking markets is nothing new to me.
With Iowa legalizing in the next few months (already legal, just no infrastructure yet), I started thinking back on all this stuff I wish I had known when I got started in this industry (around the time I opened my forum account here). I wish there had been somebody around here to sit down and start explaining the many common pitfalls for new guys. I know it sounds odd but it's a good way to give back. I really really like the SBR community and would like to see it continue to thrive, even in the face of likely less foot traffic with the US now having legal local options.
We need new guys to stick around longer. We need more intelligent talk around here about handicapping specifically. The last few months seemed like a great opportunity to try and do my part to help out around here. I rarely see the old vets around here help new guys, in any capacity (which isn't to say there's not any, just not a lot). Hopefully me making videos will get the new guys some help so they stick around.
NOTE: These are just raw thoughts spilling out, some could be completely factually inaccurate.
