Alan Boston the College Hoops 'capper - whatever happened to him?

he was definitely entertaining to listen to on the radio or TV.

he seemed to know a good deal about College Basketball.

one thing about him, though - he would always rip on the coaching ability of Coach K and Coach Roy Williams. i know they are considered greats and the more interesting take is to say that they are NOT greats, but let me tell you something: BOTH of those guys are ABSOLUTELY GREAT COACHES

I think he bet against them a lot and lost his assss doing so, so he was just angry at them.

it's like when someone wants to say an above-average player is "pound for pound" one of the best. it's more fashionable and interesting to say that rather than to gloat about a star.

but let me tell you something: sometimes GREAT really IS GREAT.

Nope. Random thought for the day. I think Roy a bit overrated but still great. Coach K just rolls out five 1st rounders these days. Still gonna get caught in the tourney. They can’t shoot.

Cuser, you are mistaking Coach K for Coach Calipari. Calipari is the one who routinely gets 4 or 5 kids picked in the NBA draft each year though maybe 3 are first rounders and the other 1 or 2 are in the second round.

please name a year where Duke had more than 3 first round draft choices in the last 10-15 years? you cannot find one. they usually have 2 or 3 first rounders i will give you that, but NOT FIVE. no way.

he is a PHENOMENAL coach as is Coach Roy Williams. recruiting, coaching up the role and bench guys, managing the games, managing the programs. to do this year after year for 30-35 years at this high level is absolutely AMAZING

He's still on twitter. His handle is bostonred88 and he occasionally posts picks. Mostly he just rants about stuff.

I played poker with him last summer at Foxwoods. He looked a little frail, which may be unfair, because in the past he always was bulked up from weightlifting and looked much younger than his actual age.

He’s still around. Gave out Marshall +3 yesterday. He sometimes has useful info about college hoops, you can find him on some podcasts once in a while. I find however that you gotta filter out his rants to get anything worthwhile. You could google @bostonred88 for more info.

Homie, great post! You are 100% correct.

You can't deny the entertainment value. But his approach is outrageous and very much like Groundhog Day. How many times has this cycle taken place?

    1) I can no longer beat the game.
    2) This is it. It really is.
    3) I'll give it one more shot.
    4) I've been losing. But my thought has been good.
    5) I'm back.

This has been going on for MINIMUM of 10 years. And probably more like 12+ years.

PS, does he show up on any podcast this year? I'll listen! LOL

That part is true. He always kept himself in good shape. So, really, he's held his age well (for the most part).

    Homie:

ABoston has referenced the book "The Handicapper" by Kalich:

    https://www.amazon.com/Handicapper-R.../dp/051754024X

ABoston used to say that he felt like he became the protagonist in the book. But I stress that comment is PAST TENSE. It's not vs the current market.

BTW, I read the book. It's quite good, but fabricated to non-believable in some areas.

Been reading his twitter notes. Pretty good:

    @bostonred88

Per usual, he can be entertaining. Would I tail his picks? No way.

In general you’re probably correct. Duke does have four 1st rounders projected right now and as many as three in the top 5. I just think he went the way of Calipari lately and just loads up on lottery picks. No way they didn’t pay for Zion.

I do remember Alan Boston. Thought you meant a poster named Al Boston.

There’s a sports betting documentary he’s in on amazon prime, was pretty interesting. Guy was a hermit with serious problems. But the other guys in it seemed to have even bigger problems.
