Depends on how much money they want to pay players... just like most universities.

Too many better coaches in the conference. Illinois will keep him around though for at least two more seasons but I just don't see them ever having more than an average team. Illinois cares more about political correctness and destroying tradition than winning football games.

Affirmative action at its worst. Lovie never was nor ever will be a competent football coach.

Until that team has an identity that can get the players and fans to rally around and bring some pride to the team that can motivate some decent players to want to come play there; they're never going to be a decent team. Even if the admin wants to avoid the Chief at all costs, they need something besides the orange block I.

However, I doubt the school even cares whether they have a decent team or not. All they care about is not being seen as racist because they'd rather be politically correct.

I think it's more because Illinois cares more about College Basketball more than Football.

They're one of the youngest teams in FBS, so they'll prob improve. Recall Lovie Smith's long HC stint upstate with NFL Bears; took them to Super Bowl 41. Not so good after that at Tampa Bay, but he just didn't have the horses there.

illinois is a funny case................ one of the very few states with lots of football talent where none of the top recruits go to Illinois. and it's been largely this way for a very long time. Rutgers/NJ is somewhat similar but not to the extent of UI.
people mentioning Illinois basketball. it used to be a near powerhouse but i don't remember many NCAA appearances for a very long time. but in the 1980's and 1990's it was very prominent.

oops: i was more than a bit off on the illini basketball. much more recent success than i remember. been in 11 ncaa tourneys since 2000. 4 sweet 16's and 2 elite eights....

Wisconsin should be thoroughly embarrassed. i remember losing on them multiple times in 12 pm games. i thought they were past those slow early starts making it into a game.

Chryst is a total dumbass. Once Illinois got their last first down, he started calling timeouts, even though he had no chance to get the ball back. That allowed them to run 3 more plays and get the ball closer for the FG.

He should have let them run it down and used the TOs to ice the kicker.

i don't see how this team hasn't been steadily improving........ college football will always have bad losses and poor teams will have alot of them.

maryland was considered an up-and-coming program. then 59-0 penn state........... michigan has horrible game against ohio state. fire harbaugh!!!!...... of course, iowa loses to michigan. and loses again (i think). wisconsin now lost to illinois.

unless you are alabama, clemson, oklahoma, ohio state, life is rough in college football.

illinois should fire lovie smith.......... and then what?. pay someone else millions of dollars to get similar or worse results........... these old coaches seem to be good for tired programs. young hot shot coaches are so variable, and not sure a good one will go to illinois
