Two No Hitters On Same Day By Nationals Rookie Team

The Washington Nationals‘ Gulf Coast League affiliate produced one of the best pitching days you’ll see at the professional level, as four pitchers combined to not allow a single hit in a doubleheader sweep of the Miami Marlins’ GCL team on Sunday.

Right-hander Joan Baez, currently ranked 21st on MLB.com’s list of the top 30 prospects in the Nationals organization, made the start in the first game of the doubleheader and struck out seven while walking one in six innings pitched in the Nationals’ 4-0 win. Baez would be relieved by southpaw Jose Jimenez, who walked one in his lone inning of work.

Baez, who struggled to start the season with the Nationals’ Single-A advanced affiliate, is 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA in four starts in the Gulf Coast League. Prior to being sent to the franchise’s GCL affiliate, Baez was 1-6 with a 5.10 ERA in ten starts for Single-A advanced Potomac.

Jared Johnson pitched the first four innings of the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader, striking out two while walking one. Johnson did not factor into the decision however, with Gilberto Chu working the final three innings of the Nationals’ 1-0 victory. Chu struck out four batters while walking none, dropping his ERA down to 1.00 on the season.

The Nationals scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth, with Juan Evangelista driving in Jackson Cramer with two outs in the inning. Sunday’s start was just the second of the season for Johnson, who’s 1-1 with a 0.64 ERA in seven appearances for the Nationals’ GCL affiliate.
