    Oscars - Red Carpet plays

Tough year for oscar betting. Too many big faves not worth the juice.

Personally, I thought Singstreet & Lion were the best movies of the year. Singstreet not even nominated.

LA LA land seems poised to fill the trophy case, not surprising since it's a musical/rom-com about struggling musicians/acting in hollywood & oscar voters likely identified strongly with its themes.

I have a feeling Moonlight may take a couple surprise awards.

Here are my bets based on either personal preference or hunch.

    Best film - Moonlight +520

Best Director - Barry Jenkins Moonlight +950

Supporting actor - Mike Shannon Nocturnal Animals +3000

Best actress - Natalie Portman Jackie +725

Supporting actress - Naomi Harris Hidden figures +2500

    Cinematography - Moonlight +1600

    Editing- Arrival +1400

Visual effects - Dr Strange +1375

    Adapted screenplay - Lion +1425

    $10 each

Probably money down the drain but it's all fun.

Did any of these bigger dogs ever hit in the past? It seems like most of them are sucker bets.

Denzel will win Best Actor. Pound all the black movies, and actors. Is what it is. They will make up for the perceived racism the past two years. Affleck should win though. How anyone likes La La Land is beyond me. Manchester by the Sea was the best in my eyes, but no chance. Odds skyrocketed since last night. Think Moonlight could take it because the above mentioned. Plus, it's better than whatever La La Land was.

I liked LA LA land, but I also liked it 15 years ago when it was called Moulin Rouge, only at least had Kidman in lingerie. They usually try to pick movies that were different from anything before it or an enduring thought provoking message. In my mind Moonlight has both and wouldnt be surprised to see win more than initially thought.

I agree. It will also be like a lifetime achievement award type thing.

I like the Jeff Bridges pick, that was a great performance.

Loved Hacksaw Ridge, but felt Gibson's film getting nominated was the best Hollywood would offer him.

I can't pull the trigger on Denzel. Love him, but Affleck should win. Just think he won't. Money, or my heart. Like betting against my own team. I need to find some obsure pick to root for.

Kind of like the field over Emma Stone. Think the French chick, or Portman could steal it.

Nice call on Moonlight, bud. Don't feel like checking your others, did you come out ahead?

I'd like to see Moonlight, but hate paying extra to "rent" when I already give Comcast an arm and a leg. I generally use the library for DVDs of stuff I can't see on HBO or Netflx.

Only other winner besides Moonlight was Casey Affleck. Came out a little in the negative.
