    Is Messi the ultimate choker?

Missed that 1st penalty kick for Argentina...

He will always be remembered for that kick...

    Lost his last 3 finals...

Getting old. Limited opportunities (if any) to turn it around on the international stage...

Not in the same league as Maradona...

Put him on the Chilean team and see how much of a chance Argentina has. He's like LeBron; everyone wants to burn his jersey but if he isn't around, it's all over.

    For his country indeed...

Inevitable comparisons to Maradona but unable to get the job done on the international stage when it matters...

Sadly this is what he will be remembered for...

His PK didn't lose the match but it didn't win it. Vidal for Chile missed the first PK. Messi is the most scrutinized player on the team because he is so great at club matches.

I still hate to see a championship having to be won on PKs. Ridiculous

Pretty dumb to have grinded through what 7 or 8 tough games only to settle the whole thing by which goalie can get lucky.

Basketball games are decided on the last possession many times and sometimes with FT's with no time left of a crazy shot on last possession.

At least soccer PK's give both teams a chance to win.

You see the agony on his face when he missed it means a lot to him to play for Argentina and he has come along way since he play for his old team Newell's Old Boys back in 1994 and for me messi is one of the greats up there with Maradona, and i think he can play the world cup in 2018.

Good. Argentina is +900 to win the next world cup. They were +400 when the odds came out.

I don't think Messi forces Hoguain to miss an open goal opportunity in every final..guy is a bum, how he starts over Aguero is beyond me.

thats how people judge how good a player is? A missed penalty...go back and play chess, im sick of people who dont know shit about sport...

just to let u know...hate it or love it - if cr7 and messi retire they will go down as the best players who ever played the game (eventhough i dont like the comparison between different era´s of sport...but just putting them on the heads up they are better than all those big names who played like 20-40 years ago)

Yeah, because 120 minutes doesn't suffice . Bring back the golden goal.

certainly can't put him in the conversation of greatest ever any longer, after wiffing on a pk where the goalie chose wrong....

but, this guy probably edges him out in the "ultimate choker" category....:

That missed PK in that situation is like an NBAer missing a layup or dunk with the championship on the line. Yes, that was a HUGE chokejob. After the Chile miss, a Messi conversion puts Arg in control and they win that shootout. He will never live that down...

Messi will retire and then come out of retirement for Russia 2018, this has all been done before see Zidane 2006.

Messi still one of the best ever, last nights result doesn't change anything. Argentina full of chokers, not all Messi.

You get paid what he does.... and you miss that kick? Not really clueless in sports. He makes that 98% of the time. What's laughable is he blew it high. Someone was paid off. You don't miss it that badly. Not an All Star like he is.

Looked like an intentional miss. Look at the video.

I haven't even seen the video yet . Maybe the pressure got to him this time, but anyone who watches soccer regularly will agree that Messi will go down in history as one of the greatest ever.
Just look at what happened to the talented Brazil team at the last world cup.
It does not tarnish his reputation overall IMO. He didn't lose the game on his own by missing the penalty kick.

I'm not knocking him. Overall he is a fantastic player... wonderful career.

It just looked like something bizarre happened on that kick. Not like him to miss that badly.
